Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023 Updated Schedule: Day 7
Teams from group A and B will be in action.
India defeated Wales 4-2 in their final group-stage match of the 2023 Men's Hockey World Cup at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. This means that India finished second in Pool D.
The hosts took a 2-goal lead in the first half of the game but the Wales side soon came from behind to equalize with goals in the 42nd and 44th minute from two penalty corners. India averted the scare of a complete turnaround with two more goals to put the game to bed. Akashdeep Singh scored two while captain Harmanpreet Singh also got on the scoresheet with a penalty corner.
In Group C, currently, New Zealand holds the third spot with one game in hand. The hosts will have to defeat whoever ends in the third spot in a crossover game on Sunday in order to make it to the quarterfinals.
On the other hand, the Netherlands defeated Chile 14-0 to set a new record for the largest win margin in men's hockey. Australia had defeated South Africa 12-0 in the 2010 edition of the quadrennial event.
Day 7 preview
Day 7 is also going to be a jam-packed day with 4 matches to be played, two from Group A and two from Group B, to finish the group stage. At the Birsa Munda International Stadium, Belgium will face Japan in the opening pool game before Germany takes on South Korea. In the Group A match, Australia will try to maintain its position by beating South Africa, while France will try to eliminate Argentina to ensure its spot in the crossovers. This will be a do-or-die match for France.
