The junior Australian hockey team finished second in their pool, failing to qualify for the last eight stage.

Australia’s early exit from the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2025 has sent shockwaves through the hockey world.

The Sultan of Johor Cup champions, who had defeated India 2-1 in the final earlier this year, failed to make the quarter-finals at the Junior World Cup, marking a rare and historic setback for one of the sport’s most consistent powerhouses at the global stage.

The elimination also ended Australia’s unblemished record at Field Hockey World Cups, with the men’s junior team becoming the first Australian side to finish outside the top eight at any World Cup across age groups.

The Australian junior men’s hockey team were pitted in Pool F alongside Australia, Bangladesh, and Korea. They began their campaign with a 5-3 victory over Bangladesh but succumbed to an 3-8 defeat at the hands of France.

In their final league stage encounter, they defeated Korea 3-1, but it wasn’t enough to see them through to the quarter-finals.

France topped the Pool F standings with nine points from three matches, having won all encounters. They finished the group stage with a score difference of 16, having scored 22 goals and conceded six.

Australia finished second with six points, including two wins and a loss. Moreover, they had a negative score difference of -1, scoring 11 goals and conceding 12.

Bangladesh and Korea finished in third and fourth place, respectively, with one point each. They registered a draw against each other and a couple of losses apiece against the remaining two opponents in the pool.

Australia will take on Japan in their upcoming encounter at the FIH Men’s Junior Hockey World Cup Tamil Nadu 2025. The match will be played at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium in Chennai on Thursday, December 4, to determine the final positions of the teams.

The quarter-finals are scheduled to start from Friday in Chennai. Spain will take on New Zealand, while France will lock horns against Germany. The Netherlands will be up against Argentina, and hosts India will cross swords against Belgium.

Why did Australia get eliminated from FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2025?

Australia finished second in Pool F with six points but had an inferior goal difference and did not qualify as one of the top teams or best second-placed teams, resulting in an early exit.

Has Australia ever failed to reach quarter-finals of Field Hockey World Cups?

Yes. This is the first time any Australian hockey team—across junior or senior levels—has failed to finish inside the top eight at a World Cup.

How did Australia perform in the Pool stage at FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2025?

Australia beat Bangladesh 5-3, lost to France 8-3, and defeated Korea 3-1.

What is Australia’s next match in the tournament?

Australia will face Japan on Thursday, December 4, at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium in Chennai to determine final placements.
