Here is the full calendar of events for Indian hockey in 2022

There is a lot of action to look forward to during the year in the sport.

The year 2021 was special and memorable for Indian hockey. Both men’s and women’s teams made headway in their respective tournaments and won major accolades. While the men’s team secured an Olympic bronze after several decades, the women’s team finished fourth, their highest placing at the Olympics. Indian hockey is going through a period of resurgence, with several incredible young players coming through the ranks.

The exceptional work from the management has improved the level of performance for each individual. As it happens, the expectations of the fans are high heading into the year 2022. There are plenty of prestigious tournaments waiting for India’s hockey stars in the year. Therefore, let us take a look at all of the events that are of importance to Indian hockey in 2022:

January

Women’s Asia Cup 2022 - Starting from January 21 onwards, the competition will be held in Muscat, Oman, but was originally supposed to take place in Bangkok, Thailand. India are the defending champions and the top four teams will earn a place in the 2022 Women's FIH Hockey World Cup.

FIH Hockey Pro League 2021-2022 (Women) - Starting from 31 January 2022 onwards, the competition will run until 19 June 2022. It started in October 2021, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. India and Spain will be replacing New Zealand and Australia, as they have withdrawn from the competition for the same reason.

February

FIH Hockey Pro League 2021-2022 (Men) - The men’s edition of the Pro League will commence from 5 February 2022 onwards and run until 19 June 2022. New Zealand and Australia have withdrawn from this tournament as well. The Indian team will be up against heavyweights like Germany, Belgium and more.

July

FIH Hockey Women's World Cup 2022 - The prestigious Women’s Hockey World Cup will commence from 1 July 2022 onwards and will see the Indian team clash for the ultimate glory, if they earn qualification. Spain and the Netherlands will play host to the tournament. The Dutch are the defending champions as well and will be strong favourites yet again. India reached the quarter-final stage at the previous edition.

2022 Commonwealth Games, Birmingham - The city of Birmingham in England will host the 2022 CWG Games. Both men’s and women’s teams will participate in the multi-sport event. This event starts from 28 July onwards, a few days after the Women’s World Cup and a lot of eyes will be on the Indian contingent’s performance.

September

19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 - Both men’s and women’s hockey teams from India will travel to China for the coveted Asian Games. The multi-sport meet starts from 10 September 2022 onwards and will last till 25 September 2022. The men’s team won the bronze in 2018 by beating Pakistan, while the women’s team won the silver following the final defeat to Japan.

December

FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup - The 2022 edition will be the first of the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup tournament. It will start on 10 December 2022 and will last a week. Indian women will face teams like Spain, Canada, Japan, South Korea and so on in Valencia, Spain. This tournament will act as the qualifiers for the FIH Women’s Pro League.
