Which teams have won the Women's Hockey Asia Cup so far?

South Korea are the most successful team in the competition, having won three titles.

The Women's Hockey Asia Cup 2022 is the 10th edition of the Asian Hockey Federation's quadrennial international women's field hockey competition. It will begin on January 21 and will run its course till January 28, 2022. The event was initially slated to take place in Bangkok, Thailand, but was relocated to the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat, Oman. Since the Asian Champions Trophy's inception in 1985, there have been nine editions.

About Women's Hockey Asia Cup

The Women’s Hockey Asia Cup is a quadrennial tournament that began in 1985. In its second edition in 1989, the Women's Hockey Asia Cup again used a round-robin format, with China coming out on top. Knockout bouts first appeared in the 1993 edition.

Seoul, South Korea, hosted the inaugural Women's Asia Cup hockey event. South Korea has won the women's Asia Cup three times in a row. Japan has finished runner-up the most times, finishing at the third spot thrice.

Hong Kong and India have hosted the women's Asia Cup on the majority of occasions, twice. 12 countries have taken part in the women’s Asia Cup so far. Let's take a look at the previous tournament winners.

1985: South Korea

In the inaugural edition of the women's Asia Cup in Seoul in 1985, the number of six teams competed, and South Korea became the first team to win as a host nation. In 1985, India did not participate in the inaugural Women's Asia Cup in Seoul. Japan became the second runner-up, as they were defeated by South Korea in the final.

1989: China

In its second edition in 1989, the Women's Hockey Asia Cup used a round-robin format, with China coming out on top. Only five teams participated in the second edition, including India. This time, India faced the heaviest loss in the Women's Hockey Asia Cup, which happened in 1989 when defeated 2-6 by Japan in Hong Kong.

1993: South Korea

South Korea won consecutive titles in 1993 and 1999 and is the only country to have successfully defended its crown. This time, China came in second place and India moved to the third place after beating Japan with a 1-0 scoreline.

1999: South Korea

India became the first host nation to come second in the Women's Hockey Asia Cup, losing to South Korea in the 1999 edition in New Delhi. Kazakhstan competed in the Asia Cup for the first time in 1999.

2004: India

The 2004 Women's Hockey Asia Cup was the fifth edition of the tournament that took place between February 1-8 at the Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi, India. The winner earned a place in the 2006 World Cup. The first Asia Cup victory of India came in 2004, in front of their home crowd, when India defeated Japan in the final by a solitary goal (1-0).

2007: Japan

The 2007 Women's Hockey Asia Cup was the sixth edition of the competition. It took place in Hong Kong from September 1 to September 9, 2007. Japan won the championship by defeating South Korea. China finished third after defeating India. Japan's 7-6 victory against Korea in the 2007 women's Asia Cup final was the only one that required a penalty shootout. 

2009: China

The seventh edition of the Women's Hockey Asia Cup took place in Bangkok from October 29 to November 8, 2009. China won the event for the second time in the history of the tournament. In the 2009 Asia Cup final in Bangkok, the victory of China against India is the highest margin of victory in an Asia Cup final. South Korea finished third after defeating Japan 4–3 in the third-place playoffs. The competition functioned as a qualifier for the 2010 FIH World Cup, with the top two teams qualifying. 

2013: Japan

The 2013 Women's Hockey Asia Cup was the eighth competition in the Women's Hockey Asia Cup series. It was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia between September 21-27. The number of competing teams has fluctuated, but between 2013 and 2017, eight teams competed. It will be an eight-nation affair once again in Muscat. South Korea has also reached the final round. Since the introduction of the knockout system, South Korea had been defeated by Japan (2-1) in 2013.

2017: India

The 2017 Women's Hockey Asia Cup was the ninth edition of the tournament. It took place at Kakamigahara, Gifu, Japan, from October 28 to November 5. The winner of this competition qualified for the 2018 World Cup in England. The reigning winners are India, who won the previous tournament in 2017. In that edition, India won their second title, defeating China 5-4 in a shootout after the game finished 1-1 in regulation time. South Korea are the most successful team in the competition, having won three titles.
