Top five highest-scorers at the Women's Hockey Asia Cup 2022

The Women's Hockey Asia Cup 2022 has recently concluded. Contested among the eight best women's teams of Asia, it truly was a spectacle. Japan won the tournament, defeating three-time winners South Korea 4-2 in the final at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex. Defending champions India returned home with a bronze medal

The Women's Asia Cup 2022 was nothing short of a goal-fest. 101 goals were scored in a total of 20 matches, at an average of 5.05 per match. Here are players who find themselves as the top five highest-scorers in the Women’s Hockey Asia Cup 2022:

5. Deng Xue (China), Sushila Chanu (India), Jyoti (India), Lalremsiami (India), Yu Asai (Japan), Amiru Shimada (Japan), Norsharina Shabuddin (Malaysia), Fatin Sukri (Malaysia), Toh Li Min (Singapore), Sudarat Noo-Keaw (Thailand) - 2 Goals

10 players from various nationalities are tied for fifth place. In the Women's Hockey Asia Cup 2022, each of these players has scored two goals. Deng Xue scored twice against Thailand in Pool B. Lalremsiami scored solo goals in India's games against Malaysia and South Korea. Sushila Chanu and Jyoti each scored twice against Malaysia and Singapore.

While Yu Asai of Japan scored two goals against Singapore, Amiru Shimada scored one against China and one against Singapore. Norsharina Shahabuddin scored once against Indonesia and once against Malaysia, while Sukri scored once each against Singapore and Indonesia. Li Min of Singapore, on the other hand, scored single goals against India and Indonesia. Sudarat Noo-Keaw of Thailand also shone brightly for her team, with her two goals against Indonesia in the tournament.

The fourth position is again shared by 10 players from different teams. In the Women's Hockey Asia Cup 2022, each of these players scored three goals each. Zhong Mengling has two goals against Thailand and one against Indonesia. Wang Shumin scored three goals in each of her matches against Thailand, Indonesia and Japan.

Vandana Katariya scored two goals against Malaysia and one against Singapore. Baek-Ee-seul scored twice against Indonesia and once against Thailand, while Cho scored three times apiece against China, Thailand and India. Lee from South Korea, on the other hand, scored three goals each against Japan, India and Indonesia. With three goals in the tournament, Malaysia's Nuraini Rashid became the country's leading scorer. Sharmila Devi scored India's final goal of the tournament against China. Monika Malik also scored two goals against Singapore and one against Malaysia.

3. Shihori Oikawa (Japan) & Gurjit Kaur (India) - 4 Goals

Shihori Oikawa scored four goals throughout the Women's Hockey Asia Cup 2022. She opened her account in style in the first game against Singapore,. with a hat-trick. She also scored a goal against Malaysia in the final group game. Apart from scoring goals, Oikawa was difficult to control for any defence with her runs into the box. She was one of the main factors behind Japan's initial victories, as she scored four goals against Singapore and Malaysia in the first Pool matches.

The 26-year-old Gurjit Kaur was in terrific shape at the Women's Hockey Asia Cup 2022. The talented drag-flicker was also India's tournament top scorer this time, with a total of four goals. Her most impressive showing came against Singapore, where she scored a hat-trick. Kaur's last goal came in India's bronze medal deciding victory against China.

2. Kaho Tanaka (Japan) - 6 Goals

Kaho Tanaka was instrumental at the 2022 Women's Hockey Asia Cup. Tanaka led Japan to their third Women's Hockey Asia Cup title.

She became Japan's only woman to-date to score six goals in a single tournament. She scored two goals before half-time and added a third in the third quarter of her match against Malaysia. Tanaka scored one goal against China and two against South Korea in the semi-final and final respectively.

1. Cheon Eun-bi (South Korea) - 7 Goals

The 30-year-old Cheon Eun-bi is one of South Korea's most accomplished players. Cheon, a past gold winner at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, was the only South Korean player to score seven goals during the competition.

She started scoring in the first game against Thailand (23') and capped it off with her final goal (48') in a 6-0 triumph. She scored two goals against Indonesia in the first pool game and one against China in the second pool game. Cheon continued by equalizing off the rebound in the finals, scoring two goals each against India and Japan, despite South Korea's defeat this time around.
