PKL 10: UP Yoddhas' coach reveals reason for not using Pardeep Narwal as main Raider
Surender Gill scored 18 points in the match, whilst playing as the main raider.
In the 29th match of PKL 10, Bengal Warriors faced off against UP Yoddhas in a nail-biting contest that saw intense competition from start to finish. The match ended in a 37-37 draw, but if UP’s final raid had failed, they would have suffered a significant defeat through an all-out.
While Bengal’s captain, Maninder Singh, couldn’t achieve a Super-10, Nitin Kumar showcased his prowess, and Shubham Shinde executed several successful tackles. On the other hand, UP’s Surender Gill displayed excellent raiding skills, scoring 18 points in the match.
In the post-match press conference, it was revealed that UP Yoddhas chose to field Surender Gill as the main raider instead of Pardeep Narwal. The assistant coach of UP Yoddhas, Upendra Malik, explained, “It depends on the match strategies because when we felt that Surender Gill could perform well, we gave him more raiding opportunities. In the initial raids by Pardeep, the opposing team had 4 or 5 players on the mat, but Pardeep excels against 6 or 7 players. Since Bengal’s left defense was strong today, we gave Gill more chances to deal with them.”
Why was Surender Gill used as the main raider?
UP Yoddhas assistant coach Upendra Malik said, “It all depends on match strategies because when we felt that Surender Gill could perform well, we gave him more raiding opportunities. In the initial raids by Pardeep, the opposing team had 4 or 5 players on the mat, but Pardeep excels against 6 or 7 players. Since Bengal’s left defense was strong today, we gave Gill more chances to deal with them.”
“We are happy with 3 points,” says Upendra Malik
Upendra Malik stated, “We were supposed to win this match, but it ended in a tie. If there had been 2 more seconds left in the final raid, the match result would have been unfavorable for us. Therefore, we are happy to draw the match and take 3 points.”
Maninder being out of mat caused us damage, says Bhaskaran Kasinathan
Bengal Warriors coach Bhaskaran Kasinathan said, “Nitin Kumar is an emerging player, but Maninder is the main raider for our team. So when only 2 players were left on the court, and Maninder was on the court, the opposition raider tried to touch him and get him out. If Maninder had gone out, our team would have suffered damage.”
