PKL 10: Updated qualification scenarios for teams
4 teams have already qualified for the playoffs.
Season 10 of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL 10) has come into the final phase where every result makes an impact on the fate of other teams. There are six playoff spots up for grabs, with the top two teams directly qualifying for the semi-finals. The third-placed team will take on the sixth-placed team, while the fourth & fifth-placed teams will be up against each other in the two eliminators.
The winners from the eliminators will be the other two semi-finalists and the winners will get a go for the PKL trophy on the 1st of March. Hyderabad will play hosts to the playoffs starting from the 26th of February. Each team along with the strategy on the mat will have their calculators running as well. Let’s look at the possible calculations that teams will be looking to qualify for the playoffs.
Jaipur Pink Panthers – Qualified
Jaipur became the first team to qualify for the playoffs. The defending champions have continued from where they left when they lifted the trophy on 17th of December 2022 at Dome NSCI, Mumbai. They retained their core before the auction and the players have delivered. Arjun Deshwal might be young but he is already a star and in the form of Ajit Kumar they have one more in the making. With Sunil Kumar, Ankush, and Reza Mirbagheri they are favorites to top the table.
Puneri Paltans – Qualified
If there is one team that can challenge the Pink Panthers for the top spot, then it is the Paltans from Pune. Not to forget it was Pune who were the losing finalists when Jaipur won it last year. Paltans have secured their playoff spot thanks to their all-round performance. They have been the team to beat this season as they have dominated sides. The score difference of +208 speaks volumes about their domination. Pune will look for a top-two finish to book their place in the semifinals directly.
Dabang Delhi KC – Qualified
Dabang Delhi became the third team to book their ticket to Hyderabad. The season eight champions started the tournament as one of the favorites with Naveen Kumar set to lead them to the title. But an injury in the Chennai leg halted the journey of the Naveen Express for this season. But that has inspired the team from the nation’s capital as Ashu Malik has taken them to the Playoffs.
Gujarat Giants – Qualified
Gujarat Giants have more or less secured their playoff spot as they stand fourth in the points table with 60 points. A win will take them to 65 points which is one point more than any of the bottom six teams could reach if they win all their remaining games. Gujarat’s remaining games are against Bengaluru Bulls, UP Yoddhas, and Jaipur Pink Panthers. Given the form of the two-time finalists, the Fazel Atrachali-led side has a higher chance of making it to the playoffs.
Haryana Steelers – Qualified
The 10th season of Pro Kabaddi League is now being played at Panchkula. The home team Haryana Steelers defeated the Patna Pirates 39–32 in tonight’s opening game. By the win, the Haryana Steelers have booked their rightful spot in the playoffs of season 10. The minuscule chances of Bengal Warriors for a playoff spot have been closed thanks to a win for the home team.
Patna Pirates – Qualified
The three-time champions have qualified for the playoffs for the 7th time and are in fourth place with 68 points. Patna had their fate in their hands as a win from the remaining two games and they didn’t let that go in vain. With their last opponent of the group stage being Haryana Steelers, the Pirates would want to steal the wins and the momentum as they march ahead for a record fourth title.
Bengal Warriors – 1 win from 1 match & Haryana to lose all their matches
The season seven champions have an outside chance to qualify if they can win all the remaining games by a good margin and hope multiple results go their way. With 55 points in 21 games, one win in one remaining match will take them to 60 which might not be enough as the other contender Haryana Steelers have the opportunity to get to 80 points. Bengal Warriors would give their all-out in their last match to go for the win and you never know in Kabaddi where the fortune changes in a few seconds.
Bengaluru Bulls – Eliminated
Bengaluru Bulls have been the best-performing team from the south but that is not enough to secure a playoff berth. With 48 points from 20 games, the Bulls would have to pull a rabbit out of the hat to qualify. They will face the in-form team Haryana Steelers in their final game.
Tamil Thalaivas – Eliminated
Tamil Thalaivas are in eighth place with 46 points and are out of the playoff race. The Thalaivas fans were expecting a miracle much like last season, but their journey will end in Bengal.
U Mumba – Eliminated
U Mumba are in tenth place and they would not make the playoffs even if they win all their remaining game apart. The season two champions would be blaming themselves for the position they are in. Having lost all five of their last five games, they would want to win a few games and end the season on a high.
UP Yoddhas – Eliminated
With a lot of hopes and stars in the form of Pardeep Narwal and Nitesh Kumar in their squad, Yoddhas was one of the teams that created a lot of hype at the start of the season. But the power in the paper couldn’t be translated onto the mat, as they kept losing. They became the second team to be eliminated and they would want to win their remaining games and end their journey on a high.
Telugu Titans – Eliminated
Telugu Titans for the third time in the row might finish at the bottom of the points table. They roped in Pawan Sehrawat hoping for a turnaround but it didn’t quite turn out the way as the Titans could win only two games in the 19 matches they have played. They became the first team to be eliminated. Hope next season brings them some change for the decade-long franchise.
