Gurdeep played for Patna Pirates last season in the PKL.

Gurdeep Sangwan broke the streak of low bids on the second day of the PKL 11 auction, as he was signed by Patna Pirates for a sum of Rs 59 lakhs. It was a battle between Puneri Paltan and Patna Pirates for the all-rounder. He had a base price of Rs 13 lakhs, and it quickly moved to Rs 18 lakhs. All-rounders are a rare commodity and hence teams wanted to snap him up to be played at left cover.

The Pirates, who lacked quality cover defenders in the previous Pro Kabaddi League season, seemed to have their eyes on the all-rounder from Haryana. The bidding war continued for a while, with both teams not letting their paddle down. In no time, the price shot up past the Rs 50 lakhs mark and after much deliberation it was Patna Pirates who snatched him for Rs 59 lakhs.

Gurdeep started his PKL career with UP Yoddhas in Season 7. He hardly played in his debut season, but Jasveer Singh decided to get him back. The 2021-22 season saw him feature in the starting VII as a left cover defender, but his impact was far from what he is capable of. It was in the next two seasons that he slowly unraveled his abilities.

Season 10 saw him start his campaign on a brilliant note. Having initially being left out from the starting VII, he replaced Harendra Kumar as the season progressed and eventually sealed his place with top performances.

In the game against his home state Haryana Steelers, Gurdeep’s High Five helped the Yoddhas route the Steelers. It was a statement, as he had a perfect 100% tackle strike rate in the match against the likes of Siddharth Desai and Vinay. He repeated his performance against Pawan Sehrawat’s Telugu Titans in the next game. Throughout the season, he was a standout when there were less number of defenders on the mat.

Gurdeep has earned the reputation of a reliable man during super tackles, having executed eight of them in his career. This was one of the reasons UP Yoddhas persisted with him for the next two seasons. But, with them planning for an overhaul they let go of the all-rounder. The Pirates have taken the opportunity with both hands, as the three-time champions have got a wonderful replacement for Sajin Chandrasekhar.
