PKL 11: Why Mohit Nandal will not play in Pro Kabaddi 2024?
Mohit Nandal played an important role in taking Haryana Steelers to the finals last season.
The 11th edition of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL 11) started on October 18. Last season’s finalists Haryana Steelers are keen to make a significant impact this season. However, they will be doing so without one of their key players, Mohit Nandal, as the team made the unexpected decision to release him ahead of PKL 11. This move has stirred up the Kabaddi community, especially as Nandal was one of the most reliable defenders for the Steelers in recent seasons.
The reason for his release was his involvement in the doping controversy that has put his participation in the upcoming season in jeopardy. Reports suggest that Nandal is currently under investigation by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) after allegedly testing positive for a banned substance. This has cast a shadow over his career, as NADA’s official ruling is still pending.
Nandal has refuted the allegations, explaining that the positive test results are linked to medication he’s been taking following major head surgery six years ago. While he has submitted all relevant medical documents to NADA, the anti-doping body remains concerned about the medications, raising questions about their compliance with the rules.
Haryana Steelers were reportedly aware of this situation before deciding to part ways with Nandal, even though they had previously retained him ahead of the auction, recognizing his value to the team.
How does Mohit Nandal’s absence affect the Steelers in PKL 11?
Mohit Nandal’s absence is a major blow to the Steelers, especially considering his pivotal role in their defence during PKL Season 10, where he co-captained the side alongside Jaideep Dahiya. With 70 tackle points in 24 matches last season, Nandal was instrumental in guiding the team to the finals.
His seven-tackle performance against Fazel Atrachali’s Gujarat Giants in the eliminator was one of the standout moments of the season. Despite his defensive responsibilities, he also contributed as a raider, maintaining a 100% not-out percentage and executing a super raid.
The team’s decision to release Nandal has also influenced their auction strategy for PKL 11. The Steelers spent INR 2.07 crore to acquire Mohammadreza Shadloui, strengthening their defence further. This decision has sparked debate among fans and analysts, as many expected the team to boost their raiding unit instead. However, head coach Manpreet Singh has consistently emphasized the importance of building a strong defensive unit, especially with Nandal’s status uncertain.
