Female Kabaddi players from Tamil Nadu attacked in Punjab during Inter-University match

The incident reportedly took place during the Mother Teresa University vs Darbhanga University match.

Women student-athletes from various Tamil Nadu universities were attacked during an Inter-university kabaddi match in Punjab. Reportedly there was some unfair umpiring against the Mother Teresa University team, who were playing against Darbhanga University on Friday. When players appealed against the decision, the umpires allegedly seemed to have been involved in an altercation that escalated into chaos.

The All-India Inter-University Women’s Kabaddi Championship took place at the Guru Kashi University in Punjab. Three teams from Tamil Nadu, Mother Teresa University, Periyar University, and Alagappa University secured their berths for the competition. On Friday, Mother Teresa University took on Darbhanga University and from the start the TN players were unhappy about the umpiring.

Ashok, the coach of the Alagappa University, alleged that there were multiple occasions when bonus points and touch points weren’t awarded to the TN players. At the closing stages, when another unfair call led to the Darbhanga team getting the lead, the players started arguing with the referees. Reports suggest that the referees were instigated and attacked the players to which the entire TN contingent retaliated.

Videos circulated in the social media had chaos being wrecked with chairs thrown all over the place. Players attained minor injuries and were moved away from the venue. Pandi, the coach of Mother Teresa University who were on the receiving end, was taken to the Police station for investigation.

The officials from the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) spoke to the District Collector to ensure the safety of the players. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister informed that players will travel to Delhi for the overnight stay before returning home.
