The Khelo India Youth Games 2023, the flagship event of the government of India’s Khelo India initiative to promote grassroots sports in the country, will be hosted by Tamil Nadu from 19th to 31st January 2024. This is the first time that the Games are being held in South India, with four cities of the state – Chennai, Madurai, Trichy, and Coimbatore – serving as the venues.
The Games will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Friday. The mascot for the Games is Veera Mangai, inspired by Rani Velu Nachiyar, the Indian queen who fought against British colonial rule. The mascot represents the courage and spirit of Indian women, showcasing the power of women. The logo for the Games features the figure of poet Thiruvalluvar, the celebrated Tamil poet and philosopher.
More than 5600 athletes from across the country will compete for 933 medals – 278 gold, 278 silver, and 377 bronze – in 26 different sports at the Games, which will span over 13 days and 15 venues. The sports include both conventional ones such as Football, Volleyball, Badminton, etc., and indigenous ones such as Kalaripayattu, Gatka, Thang ta, Kabaddi, and Yogasana. Silambam, a traditional martial art of Tamil Nadu, will make its debut as a demo sport at the Games, marking a historic occasion for the Khelo India Youth Games.
