Floyd Mayweather: I will be waiting to punish Conor McGregor again

The veteran has provoked Conor McGregor that the latter would face another defeat if both of them battle it out in the ring again.

Professional boxing giant Floyd Mayweather Jr has slammed his former opponent Conor McGregor’s decision to take retirement from the sport. He has in fact sent out a warning to McGregor, stating that Mayweather would be eager to “punish him again” if the Irishman opts to ever return back to the ring.

For the uninitiated, McGregor announced his third retirement in four years this Sunday. In a tweet comprising of a picture with his mother, the 31-year-old stated, “Hey guys I’ve decided to retire from fighting. Thank you all for the amazing memories! What a ride it’s been! Here is a picture of myself and my mother in Las Vegas post one of my World title wins! Pick the home of your dreams Mags I love you! Whatever you desire it’s yours.”

After that, he posted an image of a cake that had ‘Happy Retirement Daddy’ written on it on his Instagram handle. Mayweather and McGregor share some interesting history. In August 2017, the duo faced off each other in what is known as “The Biggest Fight in Combat Sports History”. Mayweather had won that contest in the 10th round of the fight and had extended his streak of 50 victories to zero defeats.

Needless to say, the all-time-great is proud of that achievement and is not sparing an opportunity to remind McGregor about the latter’s defeat back then. Mayweather remarked, “If I’m not mistaken, didn’t you tell Mike Tyson you could beat me if we fought a second time? Now you’re quitting! I thought you wanted to beat the best? Well, if you decide to come back, I will be waiting to punish you again.”

It would be interesting to witness whether McGregor remains adamant on his decision of calling it a day in his UFC career. The southpaw had made similar calls of quitting the game in 2016 and 2019 too, but has returned back to continue with his career since then. His last fight was a victory against Donald Cerrone, whose ring name is “Cowboy”. The President of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Dana White, has addressed McGregor’s decision with an arguably cryptic statement.

“If Conor McGregor feels he wants to retire, you know my feelings about retirement. You should absolutely do it. And I love Conor. ... There’s a handful of people that have made this really fun for me, and he’s one of them,” White observed. However, it could be assumed that there are more consequences to unfold with time in this particular case.
