Kimi Raikkonen breaks F1 record for most distance covered

Kimi Raikkonen achieved a legendary feat on Sunday, as he became the driver to cover the most distance in Formula One. The Ice Man achieved this feat when he completed the 37th lap of the Spanish Grand Prix.

However, Raikkonen in Alfa Romeo could only manage P14, one lap down to race winner, Lewis Hamilton. But, the Ice Man did achieve this mercurial feat where the overall distance is equal to driving two laps of the world around the equator.

According to his team, he broke the record of 83,846 kilometres when he completed the 37th lap of the Spanish Grand Prix. The record was previously held by his former Ferrari teammate Fernando Alonso, who is set to make a comeback in Formula 1 next season with Renault.

Last Sunday during the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix at Silverstone, Raikkonen became the driver to have completed 16,845 laps in his career, which is a Formula 1 record of most laps completed by an individual. The previous record was held by the legendary Michael Schumacher.

The Fin, currently 40-years-old, had his best qualification as he pushed the Alfa Romeo to Q2 and acquired P14 on the grid. It has certainly been a very tough year for the 2007 World Champion, as he is yet to register any points this campaign. In fact both him and his teammate, Antonio Giovinazzi have struggled this season, mostly ending races outside the top 10. The only race they managed to secure points in was back in the Austrian Grand Prix, the first race of this season, where Giovinazzi finished ninth earning two points.

Kimi Raikkonen, who is known for his reserved nature, was not very pleased with the result at the Spanish Grand Prix. The 40-year old felt that another run on softer tires would have yielded better results.

Showing no interest in his statistical feat, he said, " We were a bit faster than last week, but I was hoping for better. We kept trying and I think we are going in the right direction."

The Ice Man will return to action in a fortnight for the Belgian Grand Prix at the famous Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.
