National Games 2023: Maharashtra sweeps gold medals in Mallakhamb, Modern Pentathlon to surge ahead in medal tally

Defending champions Haryana and Services were second and third respectively.
Maharashtra, with a clean sweep of golds in Mallakhamb and Modern Pentathlon, surged ahead with more than 10 gold medals in the medal tally, leaving contenders Haryana and defending champions, Services Sports Control Board (SSCB), behind at the National Games 2023.
In basketball competitions at the Manohar Parrikar Indoor Stadium, Navelim, Kerala Women successfully defended their title, defeating Karnataka 57-54 to win the gold, while Punjab Men secured the gold by defeating defending champions Tamil Nadu 105-103 in overtime. Punjab had previously lost to Tamil Nadu in the finals of the last edition of the games.
In the tightly contested women's finals, R. Sreekala led Kerala with 29 points, while Sanjana Ramesh top-scored for Karnataka with 21 points. Earlier, Tamil Nadu secured the bronze medal by beating Uttar Pradesh 92-65.
In the men's finals, Indian international Amjyot Singh's remarkable performance with 42 points helped Punjab win the gold, with B. Soorya top-scoring for Tamil Nadu with 28 points. Delhi secured the bronze medal by defeating Services 93-56, with notable performances from Indian team Captain Vishesh Bhriguvanshi and Joginder Singh.
At the Peddem Multipurpose Indoor Stadium in Gymnastics, Odisha's Pranati Nayak clinched her fourth gold medal of the games in the Women's Artistic Balancing Beam category with 11.733 points. Pranati Das of West Bengal secured the silver, her fourth of the games, and Mallika Kulshreshtha of Delhi won the bronze.
In Rhythmic Gymnastics, Haryana's Life Adlakha denied Maharashtra's Sanyukta Kale a clean sweep by winning the gold medal in the Ribbon category with 23.70 points, while Sanyukta Kale secured the silver and Richa Chordia won the bronze.
At the Campal Sports Village, Maharashtra dominated Mallakhamb, winning all six gold medals on offer. Rupali Gangawane won two gold medals in the women's rope and pole categories.
In the Women's 81 Kg weightlifting category, N. Lalitha of Andhra Pradesh lifted a total of 211 Kg to secure the gold, with Vanshitha Verma from Chandigarh winning the silver with a total lift of 208 Kg, and Rakhi Purohit from Rajasthan taking the bronze with an aggregate lift of 207 Kg.
In the Men's 102 Kg category, Kojum Tara of SSCB secured the gold with a total lift of 330 Kg, four kilos more than Goa's Shubham Verma, who lifted 326 Kg, and five kilos more than Mohammed Jameir Hussain, who lifted 325 Kg. In the Women's 87 Kg category, Maharashtra's Komal Wakale won the gold with a total lift of 205 Kg, while Karnataka's B.N Usha secured the silver with a lift of 203 Kg, and Rakhi of Haryana took the bronze with a lift of 196 Kg.
In Modern Pentathlon, Maharashtra won all five gold medals in the Biathle held at Ponda Indoor Swimming Complex. Parth Mirage and Mansi Vinod Mohite each won three gold medals in the individual and team events.
In Fencing at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium, SSCB clinched the gold medal in the Men's Sabre Team event, defeating Maharashtra in the finals. Punjab and Rajasthan secured the bronze medals. In Women's Foil Individual, Tamil Nadu's Ashitha S. Joy won the gold by beating V.P Kanagalakshmi of Kerala in the final. Waikhom Sonia Devi of Manipur and Isha of Haryana secured the bronze medals.
