Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday kicked off the 64th Bharat Ratna Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Trophy when he set the ball rolling in the first match between Shillong Lajong and Oil India Limited Duliajan at Nehru Stadium in Guwahati..
Inaugurating the tournament Sonowal said that Bordoloi Trophy has put Assam in the world map of sports. “The tournament has given an opportunity for the players to rub their shoulders with players of national importance. Started way back in 1952, the tournament has gone a long way and it has produced many players of national fame,” Sonowal said. The match which was played at 6:15pm today ended 1-1 as Oil India opened the scoring in the first half while Lajong equalised in the second half. Oil India had a great start to the match as they took an early lead in the 13th minute, when their forward met a cross to beat the keeper. Lajong youngsters took time to settle in the game but eventually controlled possession and created chances. Oil India played well throughout the first half by pushing forward and not letting Lajong equalise. Second half was a much better half for Lajong in terms of chances. However the attackers did not manage to find the goals and could have easily put the game to bed with 3-4 goals. Oil India played good football and their experience in the team ensured they held off Lajong's attack well. The tempo in the first half was higher than the first and Lajong kept pressing forward in search for the equaliser. It finally paid off for Lajong in the 79th minute after Isaac scored a header from a cross by Novin Gurung. The match ended level at full time. Shillong Lajong will play their next match of the tournament against Flamingo FC from Nagaland on 22nd September 2016. [KH_RELATED_NEWS title="Related News"][/KH_RELATED_NEWS]Latest News
