AFCON bronze a great achievement for Gernot Rohr's young side- Alex Iwobi
It is the record eighth time when the Super Eagles have come third in AFCON.
Arsenal midfielder Alex Iwobi, who was with Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations, described their third-place finish in the continental tournament to be a great achievement for Gernot Rohr's men.
With a win against Tunisia, the Super Eagles sealed the third spot as Odion Ighalo's 3rd-minute goal was enough for Rohr's men to clinch their eighth bronze medal at the Africa Cup of Nations. Nigeria were in great form coming to the semifinals but a heartbreaking defeat against Algeria saw them bow out of the tournament.
The match was all square till the very last minute as Riyad Mahrez stepped up for Algeria and scored a sensational freekick goal taking his side through to the finals against Senegal.
However, despite the semi-final exit, Alex Iwobi feels that his side has done exceptionally well at the tournament. The 23-year old feels that this bronze medal will give motivation to the young side which can achieve a lot in future.
"It is a great achievement considering the quality of the 24 teams, especially as our team is very young," Iwobi told Caf media.
"We're happy with this medal, hopefully, we can do better in the next Africa Cup of Nations."
The Arsenal man featured in all the matches for Rohr's side and speaking about the most difficult fixture he named the one which knocked them out of the tournament. Lastly, he also praised the fans for their support throughout the tournament.
It's difficult to say, because of the quality even in the group stage against Burundi, Guinea and Madagascar," he continued.
"The toughest one was trying to overcome the team that knocked us out, Algeria. Maybe it was against them because we weren't able to win.

Algeria after defeating Nigeria will take on a star-studded Senegal side in the grand finale of the Africa Cup of Nations. Aliou Cisse's men progressed to the finals from a narrow 1-0 win over Tunisia courtesy of an own goal but Sadio Mane and company will be raring to lock horns against an in form Algeria side for the continental crown.
