Lucien Favre believes that Bundesliga title race is still alive

The Swiss coach's side won the Der Klassiker for the first time since 2016 on Saturday.

Borussia Dortmund pulled off an amazing 3-2 victory at home against Bayern Munich in the Der Klassiker, on Saturday as they now stand four points clear off second place in the Bundesliga table. Robert Lewandowski twice helped the Bavarians take the lead in the game, but Marco Reus refused to give up for Die Borussen as he cancelled out both the Polish striker’s goals, while Paco Alcacer scored the winner for the hosts in the 73rd minute.

Dortmund have been outstanding this season as they have scored 33 goals in 11 games and are on pace for a record-breaking season. BVB are unbeaten in 11 games only for the second time. The win against Bayern was also their first since 2016 when they had won 1-0 at the Westfalenstadion. However, coach Lucien Favre is of the belief that there is more to the league yet and to Bayern too. According to him, the title race is still well and truly alive.

The Swiss coach spoke in a news conference about the competitors, that his side will face in course of winning the title. “ We’re on top of the table in the Bundesliga and Gladbach [Borussia Moenchengladbach] are second. Who is number three again? Bayern. It’s very close.”

“There is RB [Leipzig], Gladbach and of course Bayern Munich, [especially] when they play like they did [against Dortmund],” added the 61-year-old.

On the other hand, Bayern have never won the title whenever they have trailed by such a large distance [7 points from the top] before which suggests that Dortmund stand a great chance. The result obviously puts more pressure on the under-fire manager Niko Kovac as Bayern have had a poor start to the season. Though, the Croatian has plenty of time to fix his team with the international break coming on. Even after the break, his side will face two of the bottom three clubs in the league which provide a ray of hope for a comeback. Bayern will host the next Der Klassiker in the month of April and they will look forward to gain as many points as they can to close down the gap.
