Calangute Association down Churchill Brothers in the Goa Pro League
Josley Dias scored the only goal of the match…
Calangute Association registered solitary goal win over Churchill Brothers in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium earlier today.
Calangute Coach Valentine Ezeugo made two changes to his team which lost the last match against Dempo Sports Club as goalkeeper Jason D’Mello and Terence Lobo were back in the starting XI, while Suraj was the only change for the Benaulim side.
Match was just 3 minutes old when Calangute took an early lead through U20 Josley Dias, Terance sent a through ball to Yogesh Kadam who selflessly passed it to the striker who made no mistake to tap the ball home. Ten minutes later Terence tried his luck from distance but Churchill keeper Aliston Fernandes blocked it, the ball rolled to Valerio Rodrigues but his shot was wide.
Few minutes later Calangute had another chance to double their lead when Sunny Fernandes found Josely with a brilliant back-heal, but he wasted it. Calangute came close once again to increasing their lead but Sunny’s header was pushed for a corner by Churchill’s custodian. At the other end Churchill’s Sagar Limbo sent a brilliant cross to unmarked Nicholas Fernandes in the box but he failed to collect it. In the 35th minute Churchill had a good chance to equalize but Nash Pereira failed to keep his shot on target after receiving a superb cross from Nicholas Fernandes.
The Red Machine looked reinvigorated after the break but their defender Caitano Viegas was sent off for a reckless tackle on Calangut’s skipper Yogesh just after the resumption of play. In the 55th minute Churchill’s Suraj came up with a goal-line clearance to deny Josley Dias. Four minutes later Yogesh handled the ball in the box to give away a penalty to Churchill. But Nicholas failed to convert it, keeping the score board unchanged.
On 82 minutes, Salim Mohammad’s shot from close range was blocked by Churchill keeper Aliston at the cost of a corner. In the dying minutes of the match Calangute wasted easy chances to increase their lead where substitute Agnelo Colaco and Sunny Fernandes missed open goals.
Churchill coach Alfred Fernandes was angry at the referee’s decision to send off his player and said “It was the mistake of the referee. Caitano just went for the ball. It was never a red card.”
After today’s win Calangute moved to 5th position with 8 points from 6 matches, while Churchill Brothers stay at the bottom of the table with just 1 point from 4 outings.
