Peerless coast past Food Corporation of India in CFL clash
Narahari Shrestha and Laxmi Mandi scored the goals for PSC.
Peerless SC took on the Food Corporation of India (FCI) in a Calcutta Football League encounter at the Kalyani Stadium earlier today. The game ended 2-0 in favour of Peerless.
It was Peerless who started brightly and had the initial momentum. The FCI goalkeeper Dhananjoy Adhikari had to leave his line and come out of the box to thwart a one-on-one one situation within the opening few minutes. However, the game settled down into a pattern soon. For a good stretch of time, the ball kept changing possession in midfield as tackles flew in and mispasses dominated the match.
In midfield, Babul Biswas controlled the tempo for FCI. He caught the eye with some skilful moves, but none of them yielded the final product. Peerless sat back and attacked on the counter and even had a shot from distance, punched out by the FCI shot-stopper. His side tried to build from the back on a number of occasions, with their central defender Amit displaying all the ability and nuances of a seasoned central midfielder, when it came to picking cross-field passes.
With the tempo firmly with them, FCI kept putting in crosses into the box, but none of them could meet the head of their forward Shahrukh. Some brave defending from the Peerless backline and the goalkeeper ensured that the game went into half-time at 0-0.

The second half started on the same note as the first. However, Peerless did not cede control a few minutes into the game this time. They kept plugging away, creating chance after chance. After a few near misses and a header which ended up in the side-netting, they finally took the lead. Defensive midfielder Narahari Shrestha scored from a towering header after Mohun Bagan reject Ansumana Kromah put in a brilliant cross, following some excellent work on the left wing.
Now, the momentum was completely with Peerless. Despite the odd attack or two, FCI were largely left to scramble and defend for their lives. The Peerless frontline played some fluid football and soon doubled their lead. Lakshmi Mandi made a piercing run through the midfield, playing one-twos with three different players, before calmly slotting it past Dhananjoy to seal the game in favour of his team.

Peerless play West Bengal Police at the Barasat Stadium on 11th August next, while FCI face the same opponents three days later.
