Mistakes in the defence department caused Delhi United to go down 0-2 in I-league 2nd division match at home. . .
Delhi United was the dominant side in the first half with greater ball possession. The home side came close to scoring in early minutes of the game when their Afghani signing Hamidullah Karimi’s half-volley went just over the bar. Again in the 13th minute of the game, Karimi dribbled past 3 defenders with an amazing solo run but the shot lacked the finishing edge and he ended shooting straight into the keeper’s hands.
In the 23rd minute, the away side got the first corner of the match against the run of play. The corner was brilliantly put into the box where Delhi United defence was caught sleeping and Lonestar striker Aakif Javaid was left unmarked and scored from a header.
The home side went into the half trailing by a goal in spite of having greater ball possession and more effective game-play.
In the second half, the story was totally different. Lonestar looked like a completely different side. Their midfield came into play and started pressing higher up the pitch. This resulted in them creating lots of good chances but they were unable to find the second goal.
Meanwhile, Delhi United strikers lacked creativity and looked completely baffled by the pressure.
All the pressing started to show crackdown in the United defence and they came under great pressure which resulted in causing silly defensive error on regular intervals.
In the 90th minute, a defensive error between the two centre backs gave a free ball to the Lonestar striker who just had the keeper to beat which he did. Aakif Javaid scored his second of the day to take the away team to fashionable victory. Delhi United will face Real Kashmir on 4th March at home in their final group match.
