Dempo SC beat SCC Cavelossim to regain top spot in Goa Pro League
Beevan D’Mello played a crucial role in the Golden Eagles’ victory…
Kapil Hoble scored a brace to help Dempo Sports Club to regain top spot in the league after a comfortable 2-0 win over host Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim in the Goa Professional League match played at Ambelim Ground yesterday.
SCC Cavelossim coach Severino Fernandes made two changes in the squad which edged past Churchill Brothers in the last match as striker Gammy Costa and defender Jasper Pereira were back in the starting XI, while last match’s scorer against Salgoacar FC, Adil Khan found his name in the playing XI for Dempo.
Both teams were high on confidence after wins in their last outing. but Dempo started the match on an aggressive note and marched on Cavelossim’s danger zone in the 4th minute, when Felix Chidi won the offensive tackle against Cavelossim keeper Agnelo Gomes in the box with their defense beaten but the referee made no mistake to stop Dempo striker from scoring and gave a defensive free-kick to the hosts. Once again Dempo came close to scoring when Beevan D’Mello dribbled past two defenders in the box before blasting a shot on the goal but Cavelossim defender Jasper blocked his effort to save his side from any damage. Having been denied twice, Dempo once again marched on their opponents in more aggressive fashion when Hayden Fernandes made use of his pace and sent a curling cross to Joaquim Abranches in the box, but the former East Bengal striker completely failed to connect his header from six yards. Few minutes later Felix got hold of a free ball in the opponent’s area. he covered some ground dribbling past few defenders and sent a perfect cross to U-20 Kapil Hoble, but the winger failed to keep his header on target.
But finally on the half hour mark Dempo took the lead when rushing into the box Kapil made no mistake to tap the ball home off Beevan’s cross from the left flank. Energized by a goal Dempo marched twice into the Cavelossim danger zone before the half time whistle but failed to double their lead. First, Felix’s powerful shot from the edge of the box was easily saved by keeper Agnelo, while Beevan was late to connect Felix’s dazzling cross in the box.
Down by a goal, Cavelossim regrouped and came out attacking after the break, as Salcette side fully dominated the first ten minutes of the second half. But on 55t minuted the match witnessed a repeat of the first goal when Beevan made an excellent cross in the box from the left flank and Kapil was on time to knock the ball back into the Cavellosim nylons to make it 2-0 for the Panjim side. The Golden Eagles came close thrice to extending their lead in next 30 minutes, when first Beevan’s header was just wide off Hayden’s corner and next was Nickson Castana’s free-kick was few centimeters away from going in and at the last Cavelossim shotstopper made a diving effort to block Germanpreet Singh’s shot from th close range.
In the dying minutes of the match Dempo coach Mauricio Afonso was frustrated when Felix wasted two open chances to inflate Dempo’s lead when the Nigerian striker shot wide on both occasion with only the goalkeeper to beat.
“Though I am happy because of the three points I am not satisfied with the team’s performance. However, I must appreciate Kapil and Hayden’s performances. They know their responsibilities and giving their best,” said Dempo manager Mauricio Afonso after the match.
Dempo top the table with 19 points from 9 matches, while Cavelossim will remain at the 4th position with 14 points from 9 matches played.
