Dempo stage comeback win against Calangute in Goa Pro League

The side jumped to second place in the league table thanks to second half goals from Shallum, Felix and Gabriel...

Dempo Sports Club came from behind to beat Calangute Association as they registered a deserving 3-1 win in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium earlier today.

Dempo Coach Mauricio Afonso made two changes as Mario Mascarenhas and U20 Assumption Soares were back in the starting XI, their newly signed winger Gabriel Fernandes and Anthony D’souza were on the bench. While Calangute coach Valentine Ezeugo made no changes to the side which played against SCG. They were eager to win this clash as they had drawn their last two GPL encounters against FC Bardez and SCG. While Dempo had experienced mixed fortunes winning two, drawing one and loosing the last match against Bardez.
Both team started the match on an attacking note but as it progressed the Golden Eagles dominated major parts part of the match.

The match was just two minutes old when Dempo skipper Shallum Pires' header was cleared off the line by Calangute’s Yogesh Kadam. Two minutes later Calangute should have taken an early lead but Runaal Shirodkar’s chipped shot over advancing Dempo keeper Tyson Caiado was cleared off the line by U20 Hayden Fernandes. Few minutes later Calangute’s Valerio Rodrigues was cautioned for a harsh tackle on Felix Chidi. On 21 minutes Mario found Shallum in the box but his free heder was easily collected by Calangute’s shot-stopper Melroy Fernandes. On the counter-attack Calangute took the lead through Sunny Fernandes off Valerio’s through pass. Dempo coach made an early change to his side where Assumption came off for Anthony. In the 37th minute Calangute should have doubled their lead through individual brilliance of Josley Dias who dribbled past a host of Dempo defenders after getting hold of a pass from Sunny Fernandes, but shot straight into the waiting hands of keeper Tyson Caiado. Five minutes later Mario found unmarked Joaquim Abranches in the box but the striker’s header was easily saved by the Calangute keeper.

The Men in Blue appeared rejuvenated after resumption of play. On 52 minutes Joaquim Abranches' shot from close range was superbly blocked by keeper Milroy, the ball rolled to Anthony who passed to Felix whose shot was again blocked by a defender at the cost of a corner. In the next minute Valerio’s shot from the edge of the box was not even close to the target. In the 68th minute Yogesh Kadam drilled a 25-yard shot at the Dempo goal which was brilliantly fisted over the post by keeper Tyson. Finally in the 76th minute Jimmy John who was solely supporting Golden Eagles against Calangute fans who were in more than 2000 numbers was joyful when Shallum made no mistake to head the ball home off Nickson Castanha's perfect cross from a free-kick. Reinvigorated by a goal Dempo doubled their lead in the 84th minute when Anthony sent a curling cross to Felix in the box whose diving header finished in the net. Four minutes later Dempo made it 3-1 when substitute Gabriel connected with a cross from Felix.

The DSC coach was happy with his boys' performance and said, “I want to appreciate my boys because after going down by a goal in the first half they came back fantastically. This was a much needed victory for us. Both substitutions worked for me”

With this win Dempo again moved to 2nd position with 10 points from 5 matches. While Calangute remain in 6th place in the table with 5 points from the same numbers of matches.
