DSK Cup 2016: Ozone FC Bengaluru to face DSK Shivajians FC 'A' in the Final
DSK Shivajians FC ‘A’ beat Minerva AFC 5-2. Whereas goalscorer Cornell Glen sees a red card as Ozone stun Salgaocar FC 1-0....
In a match that signalled a change of guard of sorts in Indian football, a Cornell Glen penalty is what took Ozone through to the final. In what was a rather uneventuful game, Trinidad & Tobago International Glen took it on himself to bring a spark to the game. Physically dominating the Salgaocar defenders, he found the back of the net from the spot after being brought down in the penalty area. It was however this very physical style of play that saw him being shown a Red Card by the referee. With chances few and far between, his contribution to the game was enough to see the side from Bengaluru go through.
The early kickoff saw a dominant DSK Shivajians FC ‘A’ side tame a resurgent Minerva AFC. With Kim Song Yong getting a brace, and Naro Hari Shreshta, Shane McFaul and Vanlalremkima getting on the scoresheet for the home side, efforts from Lago Bei and Manandeep Singh were not enough to see Minerva AFC through. With more possession, more shots and more goals, DSK Shivajians FC ‘A’ played an attractive style of football, one which will surely see them excite fans and pundits alike in the final to be held on the 20th.
In what was billed up as a goal-fest, the two sides who also met in the final Group Stage encounter did not disappoint. From the very outset, the DSK Shivajians FC ‘A’ side made their intentions known, with a shot in the very first moments of the game. It wasn’t long before the home side found the back of the net, with former India Youth International Naro Hari Shreshtha lobbing the ball over Arshdeep Singh in the Minerva goal on the seven minute mark. Spraying the ball around the park, the hosts doubled their advantage with Kim Song Yong volleying the ball into the back of the net ten minutes later from Juan Quero’s freekick.
It was not, however, all smooth sailing for the hosts. Minerva AFC’s Manandeep hit the post from close range after cutting past custodian Dagar, signalling a resurgence of sorts for the visitors. With the Punjabi side starting to see more of the ball, they finally struck gold when Dagar fumbled a ball, leaving Minerva’s first half substitute Lago to tap it in. With the scoreline at 2-1, all was to play for in the second half.
Kicking off the second half in much the same dominant fashion, a great corner routine saw Song Yong find the back of the net, only to be ruled offside. It was, however, little consolation for the visiting side as Shane McFaul found himself clear to tap the ball home less than five minutes later. A constant thorn in the DSK Shivajians side, Manandeep Singh got Minerva AFC back into the game moments later, with a long ranger.
This was, however, the last meaningful attack for the visitors with Kim Song Yong doubling his tally soon after. With DSK Shivajians dominating long spells of possession, Minerva’s goal was under constant bombardment. A last minute long ranger by Mizo winger Vanlalremkima sealed the visitors’ fate, sending DSK Shivajians FC ‘A’ into the final with an emphatic 5-2 win.
The Final of the DSK Cup 2016 will be held on the 20th of November at the DSK Dream City Football Fields, where hosts DSK Shivajians FC ‘A’ take on Ozone FC Bengaluru at 6:30 PM.
