Goa travel to Mumbai looking for first win of the seasons
The Gaurs have just one point from four games.
Mumbai City FC meet FC Goa in a crucial match in the Indian Super League at the Mumbai Football Arena on Friday.
Both sides come into the game in need of a win. After two wins from their opening two games Mumbai have stuttered picking up just two points out of the next nine. Last time out Alexandre Guimaraes’s men frittered away a two-goal lead to draw 3-3 with Delhi. The visitors have got off to a disappointing start to the season having lost their first three games and drawn the last outing against Atletico de Kolkata. They have just a point from four games and are in desperate need of a win in the metropolis.
Since the start of the Hero ISL in 2014, no team has gone without winning in the first five matches but should FC Goa lose or draw against Mumbai, the unwanted record will be theirs. It’s not that FC Goa and chief Zico have not been in this situation before: In 2014, FC Goa had only a point after the first four matches but recovered well to make it to the semi-finals.
Just like FC Goa, Mumbai City strikers too have failed to fire. Except for the penalty from Diego Forlan, all other goals have come from the wingers or midfielders. The coach confirmed that Forlan will return to action after missing the last three games but there was no word yet on Anwar Ali and Leo Costa, both of who were injured in the last game.
Mumbai have struggled with injuries and absentees throughput the early part of the campaign and that looks unlikely to change anytime soon. Gaston Sangoy and Boithang Haokip are both likely out for the rest of the season, while with Bengaluru FC having made it to the AFC Cup Final the pair of goalkeeper Amrinder Singh and striker Sunil Chhetri will continue to be absent for a while yet. What’s more, centre-back Anwar Ali and Leo Costa are also nursing injuries after failing to last the 90 minutes in the game against Dynamos. In some better news marquee and skipper Diego Forlan has returned to full fitness and is set to feature.
Head to Head
The has been very little separating the two teams in the previous two seasons with both winning a game each while the other two have ended in draws.
Man to Watch
Diego Forlan-Mumbai City FC: The Uruguayan forward has missed the last three games with injury and his team have missed him. Forlan’s absence has coincided with Mumbai’s slide and they will be hoping the return of their talisman player can inspire the team back to winning ways at home.
Jofre-FC Goa: The Brazilian midfielder has been the one bright spark for FC Goa amidst all the disappointing performances. He is clearly the new fulcrum of the side and manager Zico will once again want his compatriot to come to the party as the team look for their first win of the season.
Mumbai City FC: Roberto Volpato Netto(GK/C), Aiborlang Khongjee, Anwar Ali, Lucian Goian Lalhmangaihsanga Ralte, Sehnaj Singh Krisztián Vadócz, , Pronay Halder, Sony Norde, Matías Defederico, Diego Forlan.
