Franky Oliveiro came off the bench to score the all-important goal for the Port Towners.

Vasco Sports Club registered a hard-fought 1-0 win over Guardian Angel Sports Club in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium earlier today.

Today’s three points helped the Port Towners to climb to 8th place with 12 points from 11 matches, while Angels wasted an opportunity to climb to the third place as they remained a place down with 17 points from 12 matches.

Vasco had registered their first win of the season against the same opponents, while they had drawn 3-3 against FC Bardez in their previous round match. On the other hand, Angels had a brilliant season so far as they were standing in the top four. They had recently defeated Santa Cruz of Cavelossim in their last round match.

Vasco started without Micky Fernandes and Franky Oliveiro as their coach Eban Mesquita brought in Leny Fernandes and Clive Coelho in the starting XI, while, Angels also has the same number of changes as Allen Fernandes and Alson Oliveira made into the cut.

Vasco started the match on attacking note and made numerous attacks within first 10 minutes but Anil Goancar, Clive, Shubert Pereira and Vasseba Toure failed to capitalise on their chances.

At the other end, Angels Yakubu Mohammed was left with just keeper to beat but the Nigerian striker shot wide from close. A few minutes later, they once again came close to scoring but this time Rayman Fernandes saw his 35yarder just went over the crossbar.

Another chance for Angels went into vain when u-20 midfielder Joval Fernandes shot was brilliantly pushed for safety by Vasco keeper Amit Biswas.

Vasco coach Eban replaced their injured skipper Schubert with Franky in the 43rd minutes and within two minutes after coming in the striker took his side into the lead when his teammate Anil made a superb run on the wing and released it to the striker who tapped-in to make it 1-0 for the Port Towners.

The first 15 minutes of the second session was restricted to midfield play as both the teams tried to keep the ball.

Angels took time to settle down and came close to scoring in the 64th minutes when Yakubu fluently cut past three defenders in the box and shot on the goal but Vasco keeper Amit divingly pushed it for a corner.

A few minutes later, Angels once again came with a swift attack when Allen sent a long ball to Alson in the box but the frontman saw his shot denied by the woodwork.

Down by a goal, Angels coach Riston Rodrigues brought in experienced midfielder Nicholas Rodrigues to sharpen them in the attacking and his presence made the difference in the Angels attacking as they came with series of attacks but Vasco keeper Amit along with defenders Myron Pereira, Godfray Mascharenhas, Treyson D’Costa and Minesh Kunkolkar did the best job to clear every possible danger.

In one of these, keeper Amit brilliantly pushed away Perryson Rebello’s curling freekick, while in the dying minutes, Perryson wasted two easy chances as on both the occasions the substitute strike shot wide from close.
