Gurpreet has been a key cog in the Blue Tigers' wheel for some time now and Stephen Constantine will hope he has as much game time as possible. . .

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu started for Stabaek Fotball on Thursday in the Norwegian cup match against Asker Fotball. The 25-year-old has regularly played for the reserve team this season and has made it to the first team after some strong performances in the fixtures. The India No. 1 last played a competitive game for the Norwegian club on April 27, a game against IK Start in the Norwegian Football Cup.

After comfortably seeing out a clean sheet in a 5-0 win against Start, Sandhu has been in fine form for his side. It must be noted that Sandhu’s good form will hold the Blue Tigers in good stead, as the National team is set to play an important AFC Asian Cup qualifier against the Kyrgyz Republic on 13th June.

Stabaek Football defeated Asker Football 5-0 in a dominant encounter in which all 5 goals came in the second half. The 6 ‘4” tall goalkeeper was determined to perform well on Thursday, and it certainly enhanced his chances to be picked up for the upcoming League games.

The Punjab-born lad talked to Khel Now just after the game and said, “Yes im glad to get another start under my belt, i am hoping to build on this and keep performing for the team whenever i get the opportunity."

When asked about keeping another clean sheet, Sandhu said, "The experience was really good. I and the team wants to play like this. We want to keep clean sheets and be solid, and thus, we're very happy with the performance."

On being asked why Stabaek failed to score in the first half and did the players lose patience, Sandhu quipped, "Patient was very important, because, we believe in our ability and the system of the manager. Asker was definitely a difficult opposition and you needed to be patient for your chances. Credit to the guy's for converting them well."

"I think I'm getting better everyday. The training with Espen, with the other players, the pushing environment makes you better." added Sandhu

The Indian National Team’s camp has already started in Andheri Sports Complex, Mumbai and Sandhu will join it after Sunday, after the key fixture against Molde FK. In the absence of Sunil Chhetri, Sandhu might lead the National team when they walk out against Nepal on 6th June.

"The national team matches are very important for us and me personally so looking forward to join the team and work hard.", Gurpreet added before signing off.
