The Mariners were outplayed by the Red and Gold Brigade's domestic contingent throughout the game.
In a mouthwatering Kolkata Derby at the Salt Lake Stadium, in front of a strong 62, 629 crowd, East Bengal emerged victorious against a hapless Mohun Bagan side.
An attacking masterclass from Jobby Justin, who was directly involved in both the goals, was everything the Red and Gold needed to do the double over their rivals for the first time in 15 years, with an impressive 2-0 scoreline.
Here are our ratings for the Indian players frin the game:
Mohun Bagan
Shilton Paul- 5.5
Shilton was unlucky in the first half, as a well-taken strike by Jaime Santos separated the two sides after a sloppy move by Kingsley Obumneme. Otherwise, the custodian wasn’t tested in the first 45, with only one save early on in the game from a Laldanmawia Ralte shot.
He managed to save a couple of shots from Larindika Ralte and Brandon Vanlalremdika, but it just wasn’t his day overall. The 30-year-old was again caught helpless, as Jobby Justin scored from a corner in the 75th minute to seal the victory for his side.
Lalchhawnkima- 6.0
It was actually a decent performance by Lalchhawnkima, as he played his part perfectly in defence. His only highlight of the game though, came in the 34th minute, when he pulled off a great challenge to stop the counter-attack led by Laldanmawia. The centre-back wasn’t much at fault as his side conceded two goals.
Abhishek Ambekar- 5.5
The left-back wasn’t too involved in the game and in fact, got himself into a dangerous situation in the 19th minute, as lack of communication with Shilton almost cost his team, with Justin charging on him all the way inside the box.
Ambekar’s probably only good moment of the game, came when he bravely blocked a dangerous looking cross from Lalramchullova in the 74th minute. He was eventually replaced late on by Arijit Bagui.
Gurjinder Kumar- 6.0
Gurjinder was pretty solid during the majority of the game and also provided some help from the wing in attack. Some accurate long balls early on and a couple of interceptions in both halves, was the summary of his outing on the night.
Pintu Mahata- 5.0
A rather poor display by Pintu, who started off well running up and down the field. However, the winger lost possession one too many times, as he seldom delivered his passes accurately.
The youngster must improve in the upcoming games, as he was never a threat to the opposition defence and if the same continues, he may see himself dropped from the starting lineup. Of course, with such a disappointing display, he was substituted off early in the 52nd minute, as Faiaz came on.
Darren Caldeira- 5.5
Expectations were high from Caldeira, as Bagan lost a key player in Yuta Kinowaki to an injury. Starting as a holding midfielder, he took his time to come into the game in the first half. His attempt in the 29th minute looked dangerous, but was eventually blocked by Kassim Aidara.
The 31-year-old showed great skills on the ball, as he managed to get past three East Bengal players and perfectly found Sony Norde in the 48th minute. He was also booked for an unnecessary foul on Santos in the 73rd minute. After the Mariners conceded their second goal, Caldeira was substituted off in the 82nd minute, as Tirthankar came on.
Substitutions
Sheikh Faiaz- 5.0
Replaced the struggling Pintu in the 52nd minute, but Faiaz too played a disappointing part in his side’s defeat. Soon after coming on, the winger was caught offside twice in three minutes. On another occasion, in the 82nd minute, he poorly wasted possession in an attempt to find Caldeira on the wing.
Arijit Bagui- NA
Came on in the 88th minute, but it was too late for him to do anything and had to watch his side slump to a derby day defeat.
Tirthankar Sarkar- NA
Replaced Caldeira in the 82nd minute, but it was too late for him to make an impact on the game.

East Bengal
Rakshit Dagar- 6.5
Rakshit played a huge part in his side’s derby victory and absolutely earned his clean-sheet with pure hard work. In just the second minute of the game, the custodian was almost punished by opposition striker Dipqanda Dicka, as the forward caught him standing way off his line.
In the 36th minute, he received a nasty blow on the face from Dicka after an error from Lalramchullova forced him to dive for the ball. In the 77th minute, the 33-year-old pulled off a great save from a Dicka shot. Overall, it was a pretty good display by the former Minerva Punjab shot-stopper.
Lalramchullova- 7.0
The right-back was in top form, as he took on the responsibility to block Mohun Bagan’s talismanic skipper Norde. On numerous occasions the duo met in one-on-one situations and Lalramchullova did his best to keep the winger away from causing danger, even if it meant for him to commit fouls. One such foul in the 47th minute earned him a yellow card too, but he continued with his solid performance until the end.
In the 36th minute though, he was lucky to not concede a goal, as a poor back-pass almost ended up at Dicka’s feet. Overall, it was a great performance by the 24-year-old.
Lalrindika Ralte- 6.0
The midfielder was not at his best, but fought until the very end to give his side the victory. Didika wasted a couple of good opportunities in the first half, but took the responsibility of delivering from all the set-piece situations in the attacking half. In one such situation in the 75th minute, the 26-year-old put in a great delivery from a corner, which was perfectly headed in by Justin, as he scored his side’s second goal.
However, at other times, the experienced midfielder wasted possession too many times and must improve on his passing.
Laldanmawia Ralte- 5.5
Not a very good performance by the usually hustling Ralte. His early attempt on target was saved by the keeper in the 7th minute. After a lack of activity from his side, he was substituted off in the 64th minute to make way for Brandon.
Kamalpreet Singh- 6.5
A fair game by the left-back, as he was solid while defending and also provided some help when his team attacked. Barring a couple of sloppy exchanges with the ball it was a decent outing for Kamalpreet. His highlight of the game came in the 67th minute, when he performed an excellent challenge near the box to deny Dicka.
Jobby Justin- 9.0
The deserving man of the match, Justin showed great character as he led the Red and Gold to their second consecutive victory in the Kolkata Derby. He relentlessly put pressure on the Bagan defenders and on one such occasion, he snatched the ball away from Obumneme and provided a perfect pass for Santos, who converted it from close range to open the scoring.
The second goal came through Jobby himself, as his immaculate header from a Lalrindika corner ended up straight in the net, leaving the goalkeeper helpless. The 25-year-old has certainly made a case to be selected for the national team very soon, especially as Stephen Constantine has left his position as head coach.
Substitutions
Came on in the 64th minute to replace Ralte, but wasn’t too involved in the game. Nevertheless, he drove in a shot from distance following a set piece situation, but his attempt was saved by the keeper.
