The Spaniard arrived in Kolkata on Thursday morning with his assistant Tomasz Tchorz.

Mohun Bagan’s new head coach Jose Antonio “Kibu” Vicuna landed in Kolkata on Thursday morning, to a grand reception at the Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport. Along with assistant Tomasz Tchorz, the Spaniard arrived with thousands of supporters crowding the airport in anticipation to greet their new tactician.

Not only was he greeted by huge cheers and celebrations, the 47-year-old also spoke to Mohun Bagan TV about his feelings on joining up with the Kolkata giants. When speaking about his thoughts after landing in the Mecca of Indian football he said, “I’m feeling great! We are now in Kolkata and want to start working with the team from the 1st of July. I’m very happy to be in Kolkata.”

Moreover, he was also asked about the packed squad which the Mariners have built for him so far and stated, “I’m very happy with the team so far. Of course, it’ll take time for me to know the players better. I’ll need to watch matches on video in order to be a strong team. We want to start working with the team because I hope we are going to be a very good team soon.”

Vicuna’s first challenge is going to be the Calcutta Football League, which is scheduled to start somewhere between end-of-July or early August. When asked about his feelings on training at the Mohun Bagan Ground he said, “Yes. Infact, yesterday I managed to watch the ground when we talked by video call with the officials. Yes, the feel is very good. We want to start working with the team in the field soon. Now, at this moment, we’ll start working in the office, but it’s the best thing for us to start working in the field.”

Finally, when asked about his message for the supporters who are waiting to see what he brings to the Mariners the Spaniard stated, “For the supporters, I’d say we really need their help. We are going to work hard. I hope that they are going to be proud of their team this season.”

Vicuna is slated to take the helm of the team from next week, when the Mariners' players come back from pre-season to prepare for the CFL as well as the Durand Cup, which they’ll participate in during August. A long pre-season is crucial for the Spaniard to know the strengths and weaknesses of the team, as he’ll hope to find the perfect rhythm to lodge a better challenge for the I-League next season.
