The latest season has seen several defenders in both the I-League and the ISL exceeding expectations.

A new era of Indian football is almost upon us. While the chaos revolving around the future of the I-League and revolt from multiple Indian clubs smogs over the scenario, one mustn’t forget about the change the national team is going through. Following Stephen Constantine’s resignation after the AFC Asian Cup, India are still without a proper head coach.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has received many applications from coaches with much pedigrees, yet are taking things slow in between all the controversy. The new coach will inevitably bring a new philosophy to help the Blue Tigers march ahead in continuing their climb. However, one important department which needs to be looked into is the defensive aspect.

The Indian defence is primed to see some changes, with Anas Edathodika’s retirement and inspiring work from promising defenders in the I-league as well as ISL, calling out for something new. Thankfully, for whoever will take the helm of the national team, the options are almost endless to choose from a talented pool.

After the heroics in the Asian Cup, where India only conceded four goals against three intimidating opposition, one thing was proven. India’s defensive flow is in good hands. Sandesh Jhingan, who put his body on the line multiple times to give some commanding performances at the back, is quintessential to bringing steel to the Blue Tigers’ back four. While he might miss his partner Edathodoka, there’s always new blood to help pump up his game.

Subhashish Bose, who had impressed as a centre-back in Constantine’s reign, seems the most reliable prospect to partner the Kerala Blasters captain. He had a solid season with Mumbai City FC, averaging more than four tackles, seven clearances per game and playing much more defensively than usual. He almost operated as a third centre-back more than an attacking left-back.

After watching his defensive prowess, it shouldn’t surprise anyone if he shifts into centre-back permanently. It’s not like India don’t have enough emerging left-backs to fill his void. Narayan Das’ industrial work for Delhi Dynamos has made him a viable option, as he’s gained enough experience to fill in for his compatriots. Nishu Kumar’s talent might be raw, but his Bengaluru FC heroics prove he’s one for the future. There are, however, multiple other candidates from the I-League as well.

Chennai City FC’s Ajithkumar Kamaraj’s been one of their breakout stars, displaying relentless energy in his cause for the I-League champions. Kamaraj’s "never say die" attitude has allowed him to produce some blistering performances, as he’s not only intelligent whilst defending, but a big threat going forward as well. His energetic demeanour allows him to cover a lot of ground in matches, something which can help the national team.

Even East Bengal’s Lalram Chullova, who has been prolific in Alejandro Menendez’s reign, displayed a strong example of his talents. The former Aizawl FC man neutralized some of the best wingers in the I-League, while his drive going forward was commendable as well.  He’s played as a makeshift left-back before and can be a viable option in that slot.

However, the most glaring addition which needs to be made is that of Rahul Bheke. Things might be cramped at center-back, but the Mumbai lad can easily drift into the right-back role. Pritam Kotal whas looked vulnerable, with some shaky performances in the Asian Cup and a strong defender like Bheke could significantly improve the Blue Tigers' defensive structure. His crosses, throw-ins and goals out of nowhere are also a bonus.

That being said, all decisions depend on who indeed will be the next manager. If favourite Albert Roca takes the helm, Bheke’s chances of being a regular grow significantly higher due to their past work together. Even the I-league players' chances of getting national team call-ups will grow high due to his knowledge of how the league works.

If it’s someone else, however, things could be different. It’ll all depend on how the next coach analyzes the defenders and picks whom he prefers accordingly. Regardless of whatever happens, further improving India’s defensive structure after this transition period should be a priority. Getting stronger, more ambitious defenders is needed for India to keep out top opposition.

Even after all these years, the defence really is the first form of attack for the Indian national team. If the Blue Tigers are to claw their way onto the top of the Asiatic mountain, forming an unbreakable defensive bond is vital. Be it Roca, Raymon Domenech, Hakan Ericson or anyone else, forming a revitalized defensive shape with new blood is absolutely necessary to usher in a brighter future for the Blue Tigers.
