Manipur girls, Mizoram boys book semis birth in Khelo India School Games football

West Bengal girls, Haryana boys also made it through to the last four

Women’s football powerhouse, Manipur, lived up to their reputation by winning all their Group B games to qualify for semi-finals in the first Khelo India School Games. West Bengal with four points from three games was the other team from the group to book a semi-final berth. 

Among the boys, Mizoram with nine points and Haryana with six points from the league games in Group B made it to the semi-finals. 

In the girls semi-finals Haryana will take on West Bengal, while Manipur will go up against Odisha. In the boys section, Punjab will square off against Haryana and Mizoram will lock horns with Delhi.

In their last group game, Manipur defeated West Bengal 4-0 with ease to maintain their unbeaten streak in this tournament. B Devi gave Manipur early lead in the 2nd minute, while Y. Laxmi Devi increased the tally to 2-0 in the 11th minute. Then TH. Babysana Devi struck in the 32nd and 60th minute to complete the formalities.      

In the inconsequential girls Group B match, Tripura got the better of Delhi 4-1. Delhi scored the first goal of the match in the 6th minute through Mishka Garg. Stung by the reverse, Tripura piled on the pressure and scored through Anita Jamata in the 29th and 69th minutes, while Prity Jamata contributed with a brace in the 62nd and 70th minute.

In the boys Group B game Haryana overcame West Bengal without brooking much trouble to book their semifinals berth. Haryana opened the score through Nitin’s goal in the 10th minute. Then in the 29th minute, Ankit made it 2-0 when he bulged the back of West Bengal’s net. Haryana got a gift in the 80th minute when a defensive error on the part of Bengal defender, Shibnath Hansda, resulted in an own goal that made the score 3-0. Finally, Nitin once again got involved in the action when he struck home in the 82nd minute. Bengal managed to pull one back in the 86thminute through Abhijeet Das’s goal.

In the other Group B match, favourites Mizoram blanked Kerala 5-0 in a completely one-sided affair. For the winners, Lalnunzama ran circles around the Kerala defence to pump in four goals in the 31st, 39th, 46th and 74th minute. F. Lalnuntluanga chipped in with one goal in the 61stminute.
