Manuel Neuer isn't currently in good form, Ter Stegen should start- Lothar Matthäus
The Bayern Munich #1 has endured a difficult campaign for club and country this season.
It is all guns against the first choice German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer who had a dismal outing against the Netherlands a couple of days ago, conceding three goals in the game. Former Die Mannschaft captain Lothar Matthaus insists Marc-Andre ter Stegen should start in place of the Bayern Munich keeper.
Neuer, ever since his return from the foot injury, has not been at his personal best. He was abysmal for Germany in Russia and did not show signs of any improvement in post World Cup era as well.
"Manuel Neuer doesn't currently have the form and assuredness he had before his serious injury," the 1990 World Cup winner wrote in his column for Sky Sport.
"He's not yet back in the shape that made him the best goalkeeper in the world four times [according to the International Federation of Football History & Statistics]."
"[Ter Stegen] has been world-class at Barcelona for years. I think he's gradually earned the chance to play an important match from the start, even if Neuer is available."
The Barcelona goalkeeper has had only two starts this year, one in the friendly against Spain in Match and Peru in September, and Matthaus believes that he has every right to start for Die Mannschaft now.
Speaking on the upcoming match against France, Neuer said, "The match with the World Champions will be difficult, but we had chances [to win] in the first round too. We want to try again—this time in Paris. Our objective is the three points.”

Germany, since the start of the World Cup, have been surrounded by controversies. First with Mesut Ozil and İlkay Gündoğan criticised over connections with Turkish President, followed by Leroy Sane omission row. Then came the shameful exit from the World Cup and then Mesut Ozil retiring National Team over racist claims.
“We [Germany] realize what difficult situation we are in," said Neuer.
