The former Bayern Munich and Barcelona manager was optimistic about his team’s hustle with Liverpool for the title this season.

Since the start of the Premier League season, Manchester City were in a solid form and maintained their position at the top until the 16th Gameweek without a single loss. However, as the defending champions faced Chelsea at Stamford Bridge they were forced to a 2-0 loss ending their unbeaten streak.

Moreover, with that loss, Pep Guardiola’s side surrendered their top position to Liverpool, who are yet to face a single defeat in the league. In a couple of Gameweeks, City’s title campaign suffered yet another dent as they slumped to a shock 2-3 defeat at home against a lowly Crystal Palace.

Their second loss of the season gave Jurgen Klopp’s side a huge Christmas boost as they remained four points clear atop. Brushing aside Wolves earlier, the Reds continued with their excellent unbeaten record in the league. The Merseysiders have a good chance this season to end their staggering title drought of 28 years as City and Chelsea both suffered in home losses last weekend.

However, talking to Sky Sports, City manager Guardiola insisted that his side is in a better position than it was last season. “In little details, we are better than last season, which is normal because we have more time together.”

According to the Spaniard, though his side are on the back foot in the title race behind Liverpool, it’s far from over for them yet. Being just four points from top, the Cityzens are on the verge to become the first team to retain the title since the start of the Premier League era.

As he spoke further, Guardiola was optimistic about his team’s campaign this season and pointed towards the improvements that his side have made since the last season. “Our process, our build-ups, our high pressing we can use different movements, we have more alternatives to defend into attack and we are more solid when we defend deeper.”

Talking about the team’s campaign last season, Guardiola spoke about how despite City had suffered with a derby loss against Manchester United, they showed good character and confidence as they stepped up from it. “In that game, the way we reacted after a tough week with a Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool in the middle and then United, the way we played the first 10-15 minutes in that game, said to me that we are going to win the Premier League.”

“Because even if we lost that, the way we reacted and showed what we were, that moment I felt we were going to win the title,” added the 47-year-old.

The Cityzens visit Leicester City in their next game on Boxing Day, a mouthwatering fixture at the King Power Stadium.
