David Luiz speaks about the North London derby
The Brazilian defender will play his first North London derby on Sunday.
Arsenal succumbed to a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield last weekend. New arrival David Luiz was the culprit behind the goals scored by Mohamed Salah. Luiz was accused of pulling Salah’s shirt and the referee adjudged it to be a penalty and dished out a yellow to the Brazilian.
For the second goal, Luiz was wildly off in his timing and let Salah get past him easily that opened up a chasm of space for him to run into and decide the match by slotting it past Leno.
Following the game, David Luiz spoke about a lot of things and stressed on the importance of the North London derby. He believes that a win against Tottenham could get their season back on track. Tottenham Hotspur aren’t in the best of morale- they are coming off of a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle and this is the ideal situation for the Gunners to capitalise.
“There is no better opportunity than that,” said the Brazil centre-half. “We are going to play at home against a fantastic team, against a team who are going to fight with us until the end for the same goals, the same objectives. So, we’re going to do our best to win."
“It’s going to be a tough game and I’m looking forward to that. When you lose a game, you want to play another game tomorrow. They have signed new players, amazing players, so it’s up to us to win the game.”
David Luiz is no stranger to Tottenham or London derbies. Having played for Chelsea for so many years, Luiz has faced Tottenham Hotspurs 13 times and has eight wins and only two losses to his name. However, this will be his first taste of the North London derby.
“It’s going to be special for me for sure,” said the former Blues defender.
“It’s always special to play football. I play football because I love football. That’s why I’m still playing, that’s why I still have ambition and try to do big things in football.”
A win for Arsenal will help them open up a five-point lead over Mauricio Pochettino’s team which is still unsettled by the European transfer window.
“It’s going to be a tough game,” said the Gunners centre-back. “But I’m looking forward to that. When you lose a game, you want to play a game tomorrow if it’s possible."
