The Frenchman has expressed his desire to seek a new challenge somewhere else next season.

Paul Pogba dropped a bombshell while speaking to a reporter in Tokyo about wanting to have a new challenge somewhere else, especially after having his best season in terms of goal contributions. This revelation has sent the Manchester United fan base into a meltdown and the repercussions could be damaging for the Red Devils after this statement.

In one of the most important transfer windows in recent times for the club, where the gaffer, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been tasked to rebuild the squad, this news has come as a huge setback, primarily because the attempt was to build a team around Paul Pogba.

Now that the playmaker has voiced out his intentions, it will be better for the club to look for alternatives than to keep a player that is unhappy at the club or is looking for greener pastures. The French international is valued at £150 million with Real Madrid and Juventus reported to be interested parties.

However, there are many adequate replacements in the market that can fill the possible gap that may emerge if Pogba leaves the Red Devils. It must be noted that MUFC lead the race to the signature for Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon as well. Here are the five players, that can be transferred in to replace Paul Pogba at Manchester United.

5. Ivan Rakitić

There were several reports coming out of Spain in early June that linked Ivan Rakitic to Manchester United, after the departure of Ander Herrera was confirmed. The 31-year-old has now spent five years at FC Barcelona and could be on the move if United decides to move for him.

His creativity and distribution is something the MUFC midfield desperately lacked and could prove to be a good attacking outlet. The only downside to the move would be the age factor and that is something the fans have also pointed out on social media. Despite that, Rakitic would be a good addition to the squad, and is valued at €40 million.

4. James Maddison

James Maddison had a fruitful first season in the Premier League with the Foxes after securing a move from Norwich City. The Leicester City player fits the bill for Manchester United as the transfer strategy seems to be centred around building a core of young British players.

James Maddison: Leicester City's creative head

The 22-year-old impressed with his quality from set-pieces and looks a threat in the final third due to his accurate through balls. Valued at £60 million, Maddison could cement a place in the heart of the United midfield for the next decade or more.

3. James Rodriguez

The Real Madrid outcast has returned to his parent club after spending a loan spell at Bayern Munich. The Colombian is not a favoured option for the manager, Zinedine Zidane, and has been offered to Manchester United along with several other players in hopes of a swap deal for Paul Pogba.

The 27-year-old would be a like-for-like replacement for the Frenchman and will provide with decent service to the strikers and also has a good range with long shots from outside the box. The deal would make sense for the player as well who is unlikely to be a part of the plans at Real Madrid. James Rodriguez is currently valued at €50 million and would be an immediate upgrade on the current midfield options available to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

2. Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen, in a very similar fashion, announced that he was in a place in his career where he would be open to a new challenge, to try for something new after the UEFA Champions League final defeat to Liverpool. Expectedly, this sent Tottenham Hotspur fans into a state of panic, after all, the Dane is the creative spark in the heart of the midfield for Spurs.

The Danish midfielder played a pivotal role in their road to the UCL final

With buckets of Premier League experience, Eriksen could be the ideal signing for Manchester United, who also possesses pinpoint accuracy from set-pieces and is a constant threat with his long range shooting accuracy. The 27-year-old is valued at £90 million by the London outfit with one year left on his contract.

1. Isco Alarcón

Reports coming out of Madrid suggested that players like Gareth Bale and Isco were declared surplus to requirements by the manager, who is looking to revamp the squad after a disappointing campaign. The 27-year-old has spent six years at Real Madrid, and has won every honor there is to be won with the Los Blancos.

His creativity and tenacity are unmatched and he can be unplayable in the midfield on his day. With more than €300 million already spent on incoming transfers, any hope to sign Pogba can only be possible if a swap deal is used to bring down the transfer fees. A player plus cash deal might tempt United to bring Isco to the club, which would be shrewd business in all respects. Cashing on Pogba and bringing a world class talent like Isco would be a stroke of genius by the board at MUFC.
