Sporting Clube de Goa came from behind to script a hard fought 3-2 win over defending champions Salgaocar Football Club in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium earlier today.

Salgaocar had drawn with promoted side Panjim Footballers in the GPL inaugural match, whereas Sporting has also experienced the same against newly entrant FC Goa in their last match.

Sporting coach Mateus Costa included newly signed Nigerian defender Sodiq Ibrahim in the starting XI, while his counterpart striker Abiola Afuwape was strengthening their bench. Salgaocar coach Norberto Gonsalves made only one change bringing in Mackroy Peixote replacing Harmanjot Singh on the wing.

Salgaocar started the match on attacking note as in the very 1st minutes, Brian Mascarenhas’s corner was blocked by Sporting keeper Melroy. A minute later, Brian’s cross frond Mackroy in the goal mouth but his header was brilliantly pushed away for a corner by Sporting keeper.

Brian was in the action again when he made a swift run from his own half and entered the box cutting past few defenders but his powerful strike was brilliantly blocked by Sporting keeper Melroy.

A few minutes later, Sporting keeper Melroy once again rescued his side as he advanced to clear Gilbert Oliveira’s through pass to Devendra Murgaonkar.

However, at the half-hour mark Salgaocar surged ahead when Mackroy made a perfect cross to Umesh Harijan, who brilliantly beat the offside trap and found himself with just opponent keeper but his placement was brilliantly blocked by Sporting keeper Melroy but he failed to clear the danger completely as the ball rolled to Devendra who just tap-in from close and made it 1-0 for the Vasco based club.

Down by a goal, Sporting gaffer Mateus brought in tricky midfielder Quan Gomes replacing Myron in the 35th minutes and he showed his calibre within just two minutes after coming in as he brilliantly sent a long ball to Marcus Mascarenhas in the box but Slagaocar keeper Das cleared the danger on time.

Finally, in the 40th minutes, Sporting found the equaliser when skipper Victorino Fernandes smartly headed in off Joseph Clemente’s cross to make it 1-1 for his side.

At the halftime, Salgaocar coach Norberto made a substitute as U-20 Ribhav Sirdessai made way for Clencio Pinto to strengthen them in the attack. However, it was Sporting who took the lead in the 59th minutes when Victorino was brought down in the box by Salgaocar keeper Das to give away the penalty. Sporting experienced midfielder Cajetan Fernandes made no mistake from the spot to make it 2-1 for the Flaming Orange.

In the 73rd minutes, substitute Clencio put the terms on a level for Salgaocar when he finished the ball in the back of the nylons after Sporting defenders failed to clear Mackroy’s long ball in the box.

Ten minutes later, Sporting had the best chance of the match to take the lead when Victorino beat the offside trap and found himself at the receiving end of Quan’s perfect pass but the striker later failed to beat Salgaocar keeper in a one-on-one situation.

However, three minutes later he once again brilliantly headed in off Cajetan’s corner to confirm Sporting’s first all three points.
