The Englishman feels he has depth in quality in his squad...

East Bengal went to the top of the table in the previous I-League round last week against Minerva Punjab and they will be looking to extend their lead at the top of the table against Mumbai FC. The East Bengal Head Coach Trevor Morgan was optimistic when asked about his thoughts ahead of the game, considering the fact that the Mumbai-based team has been a tough opponent for the Red and Gold brigade in the past.

“Whatever their records are in the past, it is in the past,” said Morgan to the reporters in Kolkata on Monday. “History is history, we will go in tomorrow as a solid team,” the coach further added. Morgan was enthusiastic when talking about his team’s recent performance. “Our boys are playing well, really well,” said the British coach.

East Bengal had drawn their opening I-League fixture against Aizawl FC earlier this month but won all the latter games and secured the top place in the League standings. Considering the Red and Gold players’ recent performance the coach was asked if he finds this year’s East Bengal squad better than the previous years when he smiled and answered, “We will find that out at the end of the season.”

However the coach was more specific about his comment when requested, “We have got depth. Probably more depth in the squad than before. We can really pick anyone.” The former Dempo SC coach also warned that all of the players have to work hard in order to keep their places in the team.

East Bengal have faced fitness concerns several times this season. The 60-year old coach was asked about his team’s current injury situation when he answered, “We are okay for the moment.” Morgan was specifically asked about veteran defender Arnab Mondal’s injury later when he revealed that Mondal has recovered from his injury and practiced with the team on Monday. He also revealed that Mondal might feature in the squad against Mumbai FC on Tuesday.

The East Bengal coach was asked about his expectations this season with his team when he replied, “The expectations have to be realistic. Were they realistic last year? Maybe.” However, he also revealed that adding new players does not improve the team.
