Ahead of Sunday’s Kolkata Derby between East Bengal FC and Mohun Bagan AC, Indian football, more specifically East Bengal and Willis Plaza got a gigantic boost when the Trinidadian striker received a pair of boots from Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney.
The boots were sent by the Wayne Rooney Foundation, an NGO organization established by the Manchester United striker in order to support disadvantaged and vulnerable children and young people in the United Kingdom.
“It is a pair of boots from the Wayne Rooney Foundation in London,” revealed Plaza to Oneindia when asked about his recently received gift. The Trinidadian striker said he was grateful to the English striker for this special gift, “I am truly thrilled to have the pair of boots before the derby.”
“I will score goals wearing this pair of boots in the derby and then send thanks to the legendary English footballer approving the boots for me," The East Bengal striker further added.
Plaza was requested to put some more insight into the matter when he answered, “The Rooney Foundation always gets approval from the Manchester United captain whenever it sends any present or monitory help to anybody.” The East Bengal star striker also revealed that he applied for the boots a few months ago. “I sent the application a couple of months ago, requesting them to send these specially made boots. Rooney also plays wearing these kinds of boots,” he said.
Plaza was asked if the Trinidad international ever had the scope to talk to the Manchester United and England captain when he replied, “I could remember that we had talks for a few moments only once.” “He came to our country with Manchester United to play exhibition matches. Before one exhibition tie, I could speak to Rooney for just few moments,” he further added.
