Former Bengaluru FC manager Ashley Westwood has joined the race to be the next boss of the India U-17 national team. Khel Now understands that the Englishman has applied for the position and is now one of the main contenders for the job.
Westwood lead newcomers Bengaluru FC to two I-League titles in three seasons, in the process building a team that has become one of the pioneering influences in Indian football. It is no surprise than that his expression of interest has gone down well with the AIFF top brass.
India are set to host the U-17 FIFA World Cup later this year, but the team is in disarray after a series of poor results through the second half of 2016. The position of head coach has been vacant since German Nicolai Adam was dismissed following allegations of physical assault on players.
Westwood, who started his career at Manchester United played for the best part of 18 years having spells at various clubs through the lower leagues in England. Khel Now had earlier reported that former United assist manager Carlos Queiroz is one of the frontrunners for the position and now Westwood has put his name in the fray.
