Indian-origin midfielder Sarpreet Singh set to join Bayern Munich
The youngster impressed with the national team in the first edition of the Intercontinental Cup last year.
New Zealand starlet Sarpreet Singh is set to join German giants Bayern Munich. The Kiwi star of Indian-descent has turned heads in the A-League for Wellington Phoenix and now will join Bayern for further development. The move will definitely be a statement transfer move for New Zealand football.
Reports in the Bild suggest that the 20-year old attacking midfielder is already in Munich ahead of the formal signing. It is also being reported that Sarpreet will initially play for the reserve team Bayern Munich II in the third division of German football.
However, the Bayern hierarchy has seen the talent in the youngster and feel that Sarpreet will eventually make it to the first-team.
The midfielder has been one of the brightest talents in New Zealand and also in the A-League. He was also a driving force for the Kiwis in the recently-concluded FIFA U-20 World Cup. New Zealand had a decent campaign as they got knocked out in the round of 16 against Colombia on penalties.
The 20-year old attacking midfielder was also exceptional for the 'Nix' in the A-League, as he netted five times and created seven in 25 league appearances. He has undoubtedly been the most talked about Kiwi youngster since Marcos Rojas. He is set to become the second New Zealand player to play in Germany, after Wynton Rufer's move to Werder Bremen.
The youngster Indian-origin has featured for the New Zealand national team four times, most of his appearances came in the Intercontinental Cup in India. The Kiwis played in a quadrangular tournament alongside hosts India, Kenya and Chinese Taipei. Sarpreet impressed there as well donning the national team jersey.
In April, Singh - a Manukau-raised, Onehunga Sports product, of Indian descent - told the Herald that the next move in his career would happen "in its own time."
"I think, for now, I'm happy where I am. I'm contracted, the team is doing well and I am improving every day. I'm in a good place at the moment."
The 20-year old was slowly incorporated in the first-team, as he showed glimpses of his brilliance in the past season. However last campaign under coach Mark Rudan and alongside forwards like Roy Krishna and David Williams, the youngster became a metronome in midfield.

Sarpreet looks like a technically gifted player and a great ball progressor in the #10 role. However, his decision-making in tight areas still needs a lot of improvement. The 20-year old is far from a finished product, but he is definitely a youngster to watch out for.
