Santa Cruz edged out Indian Navy in the day’s other game…

Calangute Association became the first team to reach the Semifinals of the Goa Police Cup as they registered a hard fought 2-1 win over Churchill Brothers Sports Club in Group A. The match started well for Calangute as they dominated the first eight minutes with the opposition hardly touching the ball. Just after kick-off Terence Lobo created a golden chance for Agnelo Colaco to give Calangute the lead but he missed it from close range. 5 minutes they had another chance to score but this time Newton Azavedo shot it wide. Four minutes later Churchill Brothers took the lead against the run of play through Pankaj Sona, who scored from the right flank after getting the perfect assist from Suraj. In the very next minute the Red Machine’s Sandeep Subba could have doubled their lead but Savio Quardos produce a goal-line clearance. 20 minute into the game Agnelo Colaco scored the leveler for Calangute. Steven Fernandes’s cross was pushed away by the Churchill shotstopper but Agnelo was in the perfect position to chest it down and score. Energized by the goal Calangute had two more chances to hit the front but Colaco missed the sitters. In the 34th minutes Yogesh Kadam scored a left-footer from 25 yards to give Calangute the lead. Ten minutes into the second half Churchill’s Eusebio Fernandes produced a great cross but unmarked Sagar Limbo failed to score. At the other end Kadam’s header hit the Churchill post, while Blake Haldankar’s attempt was blocked by a defender and went out for a corner. Churchill were awarded a penalty by referee Prasad Sulekar in the 65th minute for Olan Chandran handball in the box. But Pankaj Sona hit the top corner and kept the home fans in celebratory mood. In the dying minutes of the match Colaco’s shot was well saved by the Churchill keeper. Calangute boss Valetine Ezeugo was happy with his team as they qualified for the last four “ I am happy with the team’s performance. They are improving day by day and I’m most likely to stick with the same plan for the Semifinals.” In the day’s other game at Ambelim Ground Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim beat Indian Navy by a solitary goal. Aaron D’Silva scored the winner in the 30th minute. Indian Navy tried hard to come back but Cavelossim’s defenders stayed strong.
