Joshuah Vaz scored a brace for the South Goa club…

Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim thrashed Vasco Sports Club as they registered an overpowering 4-0 win in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium earlier today.

Both the coaches named an unchanged team for the match. Both the sides were struggling in the bottom half of the league table. Cavelossim have had a poor run in the league as the Salcete-based team were winless in their last four matches, their latest defeat was against Dempo SC.  While the Portside were also going through a bad phase in the league as they were without a win in nine matches.

After dominating in the first five minutes, Cavelossim opened their account through Joshuah Vaz, whose power-packed shot from six yards directly finished in the net after getting hold of the loose ball in the box. Once again Joshuah was in the action when he collected a pass from Daulat Dessai and quickly sent a perfect cross to well-placed Nasar Abdul Kader in the box, whose header was brilliantly saved by Vasco keeper Shilton Fernandes. At the other end, Vasco came close to scoring when Faizal Bepari found skipper Jaison Vaz with a through pass, but the striker’s effort missed the target narrowly.

As the match progressed Joshuah Vaz wasted two more chances. First, Rayman Fernandes found him in the box with a long pass from the halfway line, but the latter failed to do justice to the midfielder’s perfect pass as his weak shot was easily collected by keeper Shilton. Then, he saw his curling shot brush the woodwork and went out for a goal-kick. However, in first half added time, Cavelossim punished Vasco for poor defending when Daulat Desai easily dribbled past their last line and calmly finished the ball in the back of the nylons to make it 2-0 for the South Goa club.

On crossing over, Cavelossim came out stronger and marched many times on their opponents. In one of these attacks, Joshuah saw his curling effort brilliantly collected by Vasco custodian Shilton. Next 15 minutes of the match belonged to Vasco as they came up with a series of attacks on their opponents. Elron Rodrigues tried his luck from distance but it was easily collected by Cavelossim keeper Agnelo Gomes. Later, Jaison cut past one defender to enter the box but failed to keep his shot on target with only keeper Agnelo to beat. In the 70th minute, Rovan Pereira saw his header rebound off the post, off Princeton Rebello’s corner.

However, in the last few minutes of the match, Cavelossim once again punished Vasco for wasting so many opportunities and scored two back-to-back goals. A fine through pass by Joshuah found substitute Mathew Colaco, who covered some ground and shot past keeper Shilton to send their supporters into jubilation. A minute later, Joshuah made it 4-0 for his side when his half volley kept Vasco keeper helpless, after receiving a superb cross from Mathew.

Cavelossim coach Severino Fernandes was happy after winning the match and said, “I am very happy to see my team perform this way, today we were the deserving side.”

With this win, Cavelossim stand 7th with 17 points from 14 matches, while Vasco stand 9th in the league table with just 10 points from 14 outings.
