Moises D’sa and Melwin Fernandes scored for Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim..
Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim came from a goal down to register a 2-1 win over Vasco Sports Club in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium earlier today. Cavelossim started with four changes as Suraj Hadkonkar , Velington Rocha , U-20 star Cryson Fernandes and Moises D’sa found a place in the starting XI . While Vasco started with one foreigner Franck Kouassi in their squad. The entire match witnessed an end-to-end affair. Both the teams played almost on an equal footing. Just after kick-off Vasco were in attacking mode as after 3 minutes U-20 player Kingslee Fernandes set up an excellent through pass into the opposition's danger area to Franck , but Cavelossim defender Frenzil Negredo cleared it on time. Few minutes later Cavelossim missed the chance to take an early lead. Joshua Vaz failed to finish from close range after getting a through pass from Melwin Fernandes. In the 15th minute a fine cross by Nasar Abdul Kader was fisted away by Cavelossim keeper Agnelo Gomes at the expense of a corner. From the resulting corner by Nazar Kader, Vasco skipper Sujil NS scored with a stylish header to make it 1-0 for the Port side. At the other end, Cavelossim regrouped after going a goal down and started to play attacking football. Melwin's and Moises’ shots from inside the box went wide. Finally on the half hour mark Moises 30-yard direct free-kick nestled into the top corner of the Vasco goal to make it all square. On 40 minutes, Vasco’s Franck's shot from six yards was pushed out for a corner by the Cavelossim custodian. Just a minute later he made no mistake to collect a weak shot from Kingslee. Cavelossim started the second half with added enthusiasm and surged ahead in the 50th minute when Joshua Vaz's cross from the right flank was misjudged by Vasco keeper Jerson Pereira, but Melwin was in the perfect position and cleverly chipped the ball over the out of position keeper. Cavelossim should have increased their lead in the 55th minute, but striker Aaren D’Silva’s shot from point blank range was wide of the target. In the 80th minute Vasco’s Sudheesh Muthath handled the ball inside the box, but surprisingly referee Jose Dias and assistant Mario Vales overlooked the offence much to the fury of the Cavelossim club officials and players. Five minutes before full-time Vasco’s Abhil B was given his marching orders for a violent challenge on Cavelossim’s Ashley Araujo. In the closing stages VSC tried to get back into the match, but the last line of the Cavelossim defense failed to budge. With this victory Cavelossim moved up to to 3rd position with 4 points in their basket from two matches played. While Vasco who played their first match of the league today, will stick to 10th position in the league table.
“We played quite well today but luck was not on our side. We missed so many chances in the first half. Both the goals which we conceded were our goalkeeper's mistake,” said Vasco’s Head Coach Eban Misquita
While SCCC coach Severino Fernandes was in party mood and said “I am very satisfied with my boys' performance. They played excellently toady. I will stick to the same plan for the next match.”
