The 40-year-old was an integral part of several top European clubs such as Manchester United and Atletico Madrid.

One of Uruguay's football greats, Diego Forlan has announced his retirement from professional football. The third highest goalscorer for his country, Forlan had earlier announced his retirement from national team football back in 2015, ending a glorious career with the La Celeste.

One of the most lethal forwards back in the day, Forlan rose to fame from his stint with Manchester United, where he won the Premier League title, along with FA Cup as well as the Community Shield (one each).

The 40-year-old last played for Hong Kong giants Kitchee FC on 13th May 2018, where he was subsituted out in the 56 minutes in a 2-0 victory.

"It hasn't been easy, I didn't want the time to come, but I knew it was going to come," the Uruguayn striker said to Telemundo.

"I have decided to stop playing football professionally," he added.

The 40-year-old started his career with Independiente in Argentina before securing a move to English giants Manchester United in 2002, a move which changed his career graph altogether.

After his stint with Manchester United, Forlan went onto play for LaLiga sides Villareal and Atletico Madrid, before heading to Italy to play for Inter Milan in 2011.

Forlan has also been part of Uruguay's three FIFA World Cup squads (2002, 2010, 2014) along with as many Copa America teams (2004, 2007, 2011) as he won the tournament in 2011. The 40-year-old has also scored 36 goals for the La Celeste in 112 appearances, becoming his country's third highest internationalo goalscorer behind Luis Suarez (55) and Edinson Cavani (46).

However, after his one year stay with Inter, Forlan headed back to South America as he signed for Internacional. Two years later, he signed for Japanese side Cerezo Osaca followed by stints at Penarol, Mumbai City FC and Kitchee FC.

Followed by Forlan's announcement, Forlan's former teammate Luis Suarez took to Twitter to pay tribute to him.
