The young Red and Gold brigade are looking to win the tournament for the time in 20 years…
East Bengal will take on Nepal National League champions Three Star Club in the showpiece of the Bordoloi Trophy at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Guwahati tomorrow. The Red and Gold brigade have been in consistent form throughout the tournament having won all their four matches till now and are looking to end the campaign with a win over a foreign club. East Bengal beat Shillong lajong’s academy side 1-0 yesterday courtesy an 18th minute strike from Somide Adeleja. On the other hand, the Nepal National League champions have remained unbeaten in this tournament and achieved 5 points from 3 games in the group stage with one win and two stalemates. Coming into this affair they beat United Sikkim 4-1 in the other semi-final yesterday. East Bengal will go in to this match with the same playing XI that played the semi-final against Lajong as East Bengal gaffer Ranjan Chaudhuri does not want to break the momentum. He has asked his boys to treat the game as just another match. Chaudhuri was quoted as saying, “We are just one match away from glory. Senior pros like Dong and Angus are keeping the side united and asking them not to be complacent.” Regarding the opposition the gaffer added, “They have been playing competitive football throughout the competition. Their attacking line is very strong with Martin, Niranjan and Bijaya key to their strike force. We have to be careful against the trio.” East Bengal had a bit of set-piece practice today and later they concluded their training session with penalty shootouts as it is a knock-out match and if there is no result in regulation time the match may go to a shootout..Editorial by Khel Now Correspondent Rony.
