Panjim Footballers pip Calangute Association, register second win in Goa Pro League
Daryl Costa scored the only goal for the capital city side.
Panjim Footballers registered their straight second win as they edged past Calangute Association by a solitary goal in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
Calangute coach Agostinho Dias made several changes following a 2-0 defeat against Vasco SC in the previous round as Mohammed Shashad, Jayganesh Goltekar, Yatin Gothankar, Akash Sanadi and Malik Mulla made into the starting XI for the Beachside. On the other hand, Panjim who registered their first win of the season against Corps of Signals in the last match also had few changes as their coach Savio Vaz named Samson Simoes, Gopi Gad, Snedden Rodrigues and Mahesh Kumar in the playing XI.
The match witnessed end-to-end play in the entire first session where both the sides cancelled each other on many occasions. However, Calangute were more potent with their attacks as they had the best chance to break the deadlock in the 32nd minutes when Gaurav Vaigankar made a defence-splitting through pass to Sachidanand Satelkar who covered some ground before cutting past Panjim defender Kunal Kankonkar and goalkeeper Sherwin Da Cunha in the box but the Panjim Custodian made a diving effort to block his goalbound shot for a safety.
Satelkar had a chance to make up for his missed opportunity in the added time when he found himself in the box but this time he failed to keep his shot on target.

The second half was a completely different story from the first as Panjim took control of the match from the resumption of the play and marched many time on the rivals. It was just three minutes in the second half when the Capital city side had a chance to take the lead as Mahesh tried his luck from just inside the box but his on-target shot hit the Calangute defender before going out for a corner. A few minutes later, Panjim defender Prasil Kankonkar came with a fine cross from the right but the forward Samson failed to connect from the goalmouth.
At the hour mark, skipper Snedden Rodrigues had a golden opportunity when he was fed with a pin-point cross by Daryl Costa but unmarked forward headed straight into the waiting hands of Calangute keeper from point-blank range. Three minutes later, he went for the glory from the edge of the box but Calangute custodian Sanij Bugde pushed it for a corner.
