Guardian Angel Sports Club secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over Calangute Association in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium earlier today.

Calangute had lost to Dempo SC in the last match, whereas, Angels had drawn Sporting Clube de Goa in their previous match.

Angels started with their newly signed Nigerian striker Mohammed Yakubu, while their coach Riston Rodrigues also gave a start to defender Allen Fernandes in the lineup. On the other hand, Calangute coach Alex Alvares brought in Selwyn D’Souza between the stick resting first choice keeper Jason D’Mello, while he also brought back their star striker Omkar More and defender Amar Halanker in the starting XI. Jayganesh Gotlekar was the other change for the Beachside.

The match started with a drub football from both the sides as the match was restricted to midfield play first 25 minutes, which ended with a swift attack from the beachside when Bonny Niasso sent a perfect cross to Omkar in the box whose header rebounded off the crossbar.

Angels replied with a counter attack where their skipper Nicholas Rodrigues found Perryson Rebello in the box with a defence-splitting through pass but Calangute keeper Selwyn came off the line to save his side from any danger.

The later part of the session witnessed few more attacks from the beach side but none of their forward managed to capitalise on their chances. Omkar wasted two easy chances when he headed out from close, off Leslee Britto’s on both the occasions.

Omkar was once again involved in the move when he made a swift run on the right flank before curling it to Leslee in the box, but the striker shot sky-high.

With both teams failing to break the dead lock, the score remained goalless at the lemon break.

It was just a few seconds in the second half when Angels’ skipper broke the deadlock with a superb goal from inside the box to send his side ahead. Nigerian striker Yakubu was the architect of the goal with a wonderful cross from the right.

A minute later, Yakubu once again played an excellent through ball to Perryson in the box but the striker saw his powerful shot miss the target by few inches.

Angels coach brought in another Nigerian striker Abel Hammond in the 57th minutes and the frontman scored from his first touch as he brilliantly headed in from close of Nicholas’ inch-perfect corner from the right.

Down by two goals, Calangute showed some urgency in the attacking and came out all attacking but most of their moves ended in the final third.

At the other end, Angels further inflate their lead in the 86th minutes when Abel made no mistake to put the ball in the net, with a chip shot over the out of position keeper Selwyn, to cement a victory for the Curchorem side.
