Harshad Thube and Cyril Dias scored for the Army men, while Schubert Pereira scored a consolation goal for the Port Towners.

Corps of Signals registered a hard-fought 2-1 win over Vasco Sports Club in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium earlier today.

Vasco wasted a chance to get into the top half of the league table as they now remained on the 8th position with 16 points from 14 matches, whereas Corps climbed to 6th place with 18 points from 15 matches.

Vasco were unbeaten in the last four matches. They had recently drawn with Churchill Brothers in their previous round match. Whereas, Signals also had a draw against Panjim Footballers in their last round match.

Midfielder Sushant Borker and goalkeeper Amit Biswas were the two changes in the Vasco’s starting XI, whereas, defender Kuldeep Kumar was the only change for the Army men.

Anil Gaoncar should have taken Vasco into the lead in the 9th minutes when he made an individual effort, making a darting run from his own half but shot wide with just rival keeper to beat. Two minutes later, another chance came to Anil when he was fed by Franky Oliveiro in the box but the winger shot in the waiting hands of Signals keeper Binu Purushothama.

At the other end, Signals stunned the Port Towners with an opener when Kuldeep’s long ball was brilliantly headed to Harshad Thube in the box by Pawan Thakur, the winger later tapped in from close to take his side into the lead.

Four minutes later, Signals doubled their lead through U-20 striker Cyril Dias when Vasco defender Myron Pereira failed to clear Pawan’s long ball in the box taking advantage of the same. U-20 forward headed in from the top of the box to make it 2-0 for the Army men.

Down by two goals, Vasco regrouped and came out all attacking and found the equaliser with just five minutes remaining to half-time when Sushant Borkar carried the ball from his own half and released it to Franky in the box whose shot was brilliantly blocked by Signals keeper Binu, however, Vasco skipper Schubert Pereira tapped in the loose ball to reduce the margin for the Port Towners.

The second session saw continues attacks from Vasco side where Schubert, Franky, Anil and Flan made the superb raids on the rivals but none of their moves broke the strong Army men’s defence.

Schubert had one golden opportunity in the 66th minutes when Anil made a short pass to him in the box but the mideo’s fierce shot went just over the crossbar.

In the dying minutes of the match, The Port Towners once again continuously penetrated the Army men but their keeper Binu cleared every danger to grab all three points from the match.
