The South Goa club registered a massive win over the North Goa side...

Yakima Mohammed struck four as Guardian Angel Sports Club outclassed Clube Sao Miguel de Taleigao 5-1 in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium earlier today.

Guardian had experienced mixed form in the last three matches where they first drew with Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim, later won 3-0 against Vasco but recently lost 1-4 against table toppers Salgaocar FC. While Taleigao are yet to earn all three points this season and are placed bottom of the table with just three points having played 18 matches.

Taleigao coach Pascoal Pereira made three changes to his side which lost to Vasco in the last match as Prajat Mondal, Vikram Balekar and Minesh Kunkolkar were back in the starting XI, while Djourou Isaac was back in Guardian’s playing XI. Their coach Riston Rodrigues also brought in Stephen Colaco in place of Nicholas Rodrigues.

The first half hour was completely dominated by Guardian as they produced numerous attacks. The match was just four minutes old when they made their first attack. Estevan Mendes cut past three defenders and shot on goal which was nicely blocked by Taleigao keeper Rohan Sheikh. In the very next minute, Estevan failed to keep his shot on target from close range.

A few minutes later, Guardian’s Stephen found striker Snedden Rodrigues in the box with a superb through pass but after collecting the ball the  U20 striker shot at Taleigao skipper Ramesh Palkar instead of tapping the ball in the goal. Finally, after so many attacks, Guardian succeeded in opening their tally when Isaac sent a long pass to Yakubu Mohammed, who produced a powerful volley from the right flank which had no answer from the keeper Rohan and the ball hit the inside of the crossbar and finished in goal.

Boosted by a goal, Yakubu once again dribbled past five defenders to enter into the box but slipped while trying to shoot in a one-on-one situation with keeper Rohan. Guardian once again came close to scoring but this time the crossbar denied Stephen’s effort from point blank range.

On the half hour mark, Taleigao defender Krishnanath Shirodkar handled the ball inside the penalty box and referee Tejas Nagvekar quickly pointed to the penalty spot. Yakubu sent custodian Rohan the wrong way and made it 2-0 for the Savordem-side.

With a two-goal lead, Guardian players felt relaxed. Taking advantage of the same, Jerose Oliveira collected a pass from Prajat and shot past Guardian keeper Ram Sroop from the edge of the box to reduce the margin for Taleigao.  Guardian with a quick attack when Snedden cut past defenders in the box and passed the ball to Estevan whose shot brushed the post and went out.

On crossing over, Guardian once again took control of the match and attacked within the first minute when Yakubu tried to repeat his first goal but this time his sparkling shot was inches away from the crossbar. However, he made no mistake to tap in the ball and completed his hat-trick after three Taleigao defenders failed to clear a low cross from Estevan.

At the other end, Taleigao striker Prajat failed to direct a free header into the goal and the ball went into the waiting hands of keeper Ram. This was the only attempt of the second session by Taleigao.

In the last quarter of the match, Guardian came up with two quick goals. First, Yakubu tapped in the back of the nylons off substitute Lavino Fernandes’ short pass in the box. Later, U20 striker Nevil Soares who came in for Yakubu in the last ten minutes blasted a powerful shot from inside the box which finished in the net. Lavino was the architect of the goal. In the dying minutes, Navil was once again in action when he jelled up nicely with Lavino to enter in the danger area but shot wide with only keeper Rohan to beat.

Guardian coach Riston said, “I am happy with the performance of my team. We controlled the match and I'm more happy for that. Now our aim is to finish in the top half of the table.”

With today’s win, Guardian have 24 points from 17 outings and stand 7th in the league table.
