The experienced tactician has decided to call time on his spell at the club in the midst of what was arguably his most difficult season.

Mohun Bagan head coach Sanjoy Sen on Tuesday announced that he is resigning from the post of manager of the club, in the post-match press conference after the I-League match against Chennai City. Sen saw his side lose to 10-men Chennai City, with this being the first home league game he has lost as the coach of the club.

Sen started his post-match press conference with a shocker as he said: "I can't talk about the team, but this is the end of the road for me. I'm giving my resignation. I haven't lost this season and lost my first home match today. After failing to come-back after three draws, I thought it was right to take the blame and move on from this job. I thank the Mohun Bagan officials for this job for supporting me throughout the years but I think it's the right time for me to go."

Further explaining his reason to leave, he said: "This is nothing to be sad about. Even managers like Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti were sacked from their jobs. I kept the job for three years after winning the I-League and have not been sacked. It was my decision that if I lost a home match with Mohun Bagan, I would give in my resignation."

Jean-Michel Joachim opened the scoring for the visitors after which Ansumana Kromah converted from the spot to level things up. It was the 71st minute Veniamin Shumeiko's strike sealed the deal for Chennai City.

This season, Bagan have been marred by injuries to key players, poor tactical decisions by the manager himself and hard-luck in certain situations which has seen the side now go four successive games without a win. Sony Norde, the Haitian forward and the most expensive player in I-League this season has also been out with an injury.

Sen often criticised his team for their over-reliance on Sony Norde and the case was no different in the Chennai game as Kromah and striker Aser Dipanda Dicka have all looked clueless.

Dipanda Dicka, the former Shillong Lajong forward, was brought in to replace Kamo Stephane Bayi who came under the scanner after a number of poor outings in the Calcutta Football League. The Cameroonian forward who was the top scorer of the I-League in the previous edition hasn't done much. Kromah though converted the spot-kick against Chennai, has nothing more to show this season.

The tactician has been vocal of his thoughts about the strikers in press-conferences. He has shown his concern about the way they have have been toothless in front of goal and claimed that his side can win games by scoring five goals if the strikers performed the way he wanted them to.

Sen and his side have struggled to match arch-rivals East Bengal's surge to the top after beating them 1-0 in the first Kolkata Derby of the season. After humiliating Churchill Brothers 5-0 at home, Bagan drew games against Shillong Lajong, NEROCA FC and Indian Arrows.

The discontent among the fans was at its peak after the Arrows game which was played at Mohun Bagan's home ground. The fans apparently chanted against the head coach after the game concluded. Sen has been the coach of the side since 2014 and also led the team to the league title in his time at the club.

The discontent has been so high that some supporters of the club threw bricks on the coach in the post-match press conference on Tuesday. No replacement has been named for the experienced coach.
