Amarjit Singh scored a consolation goal for the Blue Colts as they were outclassed by the North Americans...

The Indian U-17 World Cup Squad lost 5-1 against Mexico in the opening match of the Four-Nation Tournament which kicked-off in Mexico City, Mexico Thursday.

The match proved to be a disappointing outing for the Indian Colts, as they were left stunned after the North American team took the lead in as early as the first minute. The hosts doubled their lead in the 23rd minute, leading 2-0 at half-time in the process.

The Indian side was given a penalty kick in the second half in the 53rd minute, which Amarjit Singh converted successfully to provide his side with a necessary boost for a potential comeback. However, the efforts of Singh did not prove to be fruitful as five minutes later, Mexico regained their two goal advantage as the hosts scored another goal to make the score line 3-1. Mexico scored two back to back goals in the dying embers of the match as the full-time score line read 5-1 in Mexico's favour.

In a press conference just before the exposure trip to North America, Indian U-17 coach Luis Norton De Matos was asked about his preparation for the tournament where he replied, “We’re prepared for that.” “For me, I want to see how prepared we are for the World Cup by facing the most difficult teams,” he further added.

The Indian U-17 team were scheduled to go on an exposure trip to the USA, cancellation of which had forced the Indian Colts to reschedule their trip to Mexico not too long ago. The Indian coach was also asked about the cancellation of the trip in his press conference in Delhi where he replied, “I think it’s God that didn’t want us to go to the US tour. For us, it’s not a problem to play the United States. We got the chance to prepare here in the ground where our games will take place and we’re going to Mexico where we’ll get some very good training. So there are no problems.”

With their defeat in the opening game of the tournament, the Indian side is set to face the Colombia U-17 side on 4th August, who shares the same group as the Indians in the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup later this year. The match is scheduled to be played at the Centro de Alto Rendimiento in Mexico City, Mexico. The kick-off for which is slated for IST 11 PM.
